Booked here for my mum's birthday. Our booking was for 5:30pm and upon arrival were initially given a table right in the middle of the restaurant which we didn't want. As the restaurant was mostly empty we requested a table with some more privacy in the a corner which the waiting staff oblidged for us. After getting settled at our table, the waiter explained the menu to us going through how much to order and the spice levels and that dishes could be tweaked to our tastes upon request. We ordered our drinks (my parents went for the 2 for 1 mocktails and I copped out with a lime and soda). Nothing to complain on as far as drinks are concerned. Tap water we had to ask for (5* service is tap water without asking and glasses being filled for us IMO). When it came to ordering food we ordered a wide variety of dishes; a plain hopper, an egg hopper, chickpeas, cashew curry, chicken kottu, chicken curry, rice, parotti, aubergine pickle and the mixed chutney. All the dishes arrived pretty quick, probably due to lack of diners. Remember, as this is a 'small plates' / 'tapas' style eatery, there are no courses, the dishes arrive when ready do be aware of that if you decide to come here. Going back to the food, all of it was amazing, the hoppers had a wonderful fermented flavour and paired extremely well with the condiments. The chickpeas had a spicy kick, the chicken kottu and curry were incredibly hearty and went down well with the rice and parotti. My only criticism is that the cashew curry could've had a bit more oomph and the peas could've been cooked a bit more. In our opinion it lacked flavour and was underwhelming. Other than that everything else was delicious. Overall, I am giving this place a 4* as the food and service wasn't absolutely perfect. However, this is still a place you should visit if you want something different to the usua South Asian fare on offer. Also to not that for the amount we ate and how satisfied we were after the meal, it was extremely good value for just over £22 per person including serfvice charge. But remember we did have soft drinks so that probably contributred to the cheapness of the meal. So yeah, I'd generally recommend this place and anothing thing to mention was that there was a really good sleection of vegan and veggie options which was particularly good for my mum who is veggie. Annoyingly though, they didn't have anything appropriate as far as desserts are concerned that they could put a candle in to act as a small cake for my mum. They offered to put a candle in their panna cotta but they warned me it had gelatin in :(

Venturing out on the first Saturday in January my husband and I weren’t expecting it to be busy for restaurants, but as we turned up at the Coconut Tree we were lucky to get the last non-reserved table. Phew! to early eating - Learn from us and book ahead! This wasn’t our first visit. The food and service is consistently great. I also lived in Sri Lanka for 3 years and find the food to be very authentic. We started with cocktails. The Sri Presso Martini was creamy and delicious (I should have ordered the 2 for £12!). My husband had the Drunken Sri Lankan – it comes in the cutest elephant cup – it was tasty to me but a little too sweet for him, the hubby LOVES a sour cocktail though. For food I would thoroughly recommend the chicken curry on the bone which comes in a lovely rich sauce. The dahl is also great, so often dahl is underrated but flavours here are very good. The new black pork dish was also a hit – don’t expect the skin to be crispy like some UK dishes, instead it is soft and covered in lots of tasty spices. The only dish we were unsure about was the brinjal (aubergine) - it was like sweet and sour vegetables you get at the Chinese – a hit for me as I love sweet but too much for my husband and didn’t quite seem to go. I still ate it all though, so it couldn’t have been bad. We always have an egg hopper to share, we ordered 1 rice when we should have ordered 2. And had some roti too – there is great lamination in the roti making it so moreish as you pull it apart to eat. Our waitress was Sri Lankan and got the perfect balance of being chatty and friendly without overtaking our evening. She is marrying the chef in Galle this summer – you can’t get more authentic then that! Really great food, friendly staff and a lovely atmosphere. Keep it up Coconut Tree, you are doing a fab job!

Overall, the service was quick and attentive, and the food was good. We started with the banana sharing cocktail, which came in a fake coconut glass. It didn't taste very alcoholic, and wasn't very big for 2 people. The banana was a nice novelty, but it was already quite brown and it's a shame to throw it away. The food was served quickly and the staff were very friendly, attentive and answered any questions we had. The highlight was easily the mango curry, which was amazing, and the cheesy colombo. The curry was beautifully sweet and tangy and bitter and quite spicy. We'd definitely have it again. The cuttlefish was nice, but undersauced and didn't have enough onions for the amount of fish. The polenta fried mushrooms were tasty but a bit mushy. The hopper wasn't as good as the ones from Hopper's in London, but the dips were generally good. We wouldn't recommend it. The parippu dal was tasty, especially with the roti (which are paratha style). We had the veggie kottu, which was OK. An option with something like jackfruit would have been nice. Again, the Hopper's version was definitely better. The aubergine brinjal was disappointing, it didn't taste like anything. The 5 C's salad was appreciated as it was the only fresh dish, but it wasn't very flavourful and was basically all carrot. It would be lifted by much more cucumber and a bright herb. All the dishes were lukewarm, except for the mango curry and parippu, which were piping hot. The menu said that dishes would be served as they're ready, but everything came together. We also think the tables for 2 should be bigger, especially if the recommendation is to have 3 dishes per person. The Sicilian white wine was very drinkable, and the mezcal was nicely smokey and had an interesting spicy pineapple garnish. The cocktails were expensive, the mezcal was £10 and wasn't worth that money. All the food was 50% off as part of a winter deal. For £62 (Including drinks), we were very happy given the amount of food and the quality of some of the dishes. But the standard (full) price of ~£95 would have felt quite steep.

The Coconut Tree is a fantastic Sri Lankan restaurant located in Oxford that is a must-visit for foodies looking for an authentic and flavorful culinary experience. The ambiance is relaxed and cozy, with friendly and attentive staff who go above and beyond to ensure that you have an enjoyable dining experience. The cocktail menu is particularly impressive, with a wide variety of delicious drinks to choose from. We recommend trying the Sri Lankan Cinnamon Old Fashioned, a delightful cinnamon, and arrack that is the perfect balance of sweet and spicy. The RaspBangin Martini is also a must-try, a refreshing and fruity martini made with raspberry and lime juice that packs a punch. The food menu features an array of traditional Sri Lankan dishes that are bursting with flavor. Each dish is prepared using fresh ingredients and traditional cooking techniques, resulting in an authentic and delicious taste. We highly recommend trying the Hopper with a range of toppings - they were all absolutely delicious! The Kottu was also amazing, with tender pieces of meat and vegetables stir-fried with flatbread and spices. Overall, The Coconut Tree is an excellent choice for anyone seeking a memorable dining experience in Oxford. The combination of mouth-watering food and delicious cocktails makes this restaurant a standout in the city's vibrant food scene. We highly recommend it and can't wait to go back and try more of their delectable offerings!

The best Sri Lankan food I had since being in Jaffna, Sri Lanka. This restaurant was a surprise for me, after trying several Sri Lankan restaurants in London, Melbourne and NYC this was by far the best. The food was delicious and served in a way that, would you want to, allows you to build up a table for an authentic Sri Lankan experience: rice at the centre and and assortment of curries, meat, veg and sambal to have with your rice. They provide you with a roll of paper towels, so if you are adventurous you can go for full authenticity and eat with your hands. The cocktails were incredible, just the right amount of alcohol and fairly priced (Spiced Roots restaurant should take some lessons from The Coconut Tree on the subject of pricing). We tried to get back there several times during the week but they were always completely booked. Book well in advance! This restaurant alone would make me want to go back to Oxford, even if there was nothing else to do. PD the Sambals were great. The chili one made instantly feel like I was back in Jaffna.

I wasn’t sure what to expect here. My family booked a table for a cousin’s birthday and I was told it would be a Sri Lankan restaurant. I have never been to Sri Lanka so I can’t comment on the authenticity of the meals provided, but oh my lawwwwd the food was amazing. They have a menu option for letting them choose what we get so I honestly have no idea what I ate but it was fantastic. They were very good about asking about allergies and dietary restrictions. There were vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free options. I even told them I don’t like mushrooms and so they excluded dishes with mushrooms. Really good service and delicious food. And the cocktails! They have some great deals for cocktails, they also have shareable cocktails and nonalcoholic mock tails. I can personally recommend the Rio Rumble and the Raspberry Mojito. They had desserts too but I was so stuffed from the good food I didn’t have room. Everything was absolutely divine and I will without a doubt be returning. 10/10 would recommend.
