It is March 1944 and fastidious preparations are being carried out in time for the fast approaching D-Day. Here at The Haining, 33rd Field Regiment REME are waterproofing their vehicles, from jeeps and carriers to motorcycles and tanks. It is a formidable and very messy job. REME detachments of ten men are working around the clock in shifts in order to complete the job in time. It has to be done properly-- there is no point in being only partly waterproofed, you either drown in your vehicle or you drive it ashore. Others are attempting to float a vehicle across the lake here by the use of large Mae West type airbags tied to the sides of the vehicle. Success is elusive.
