Dorchester Abbey is a hidden gem nestled in the tranquil village of Dorchester-on-Thames. Steeped in over 1,300 years of history, the Abbey is not only a place of worship but also a remarkable example of English heritage, architecture, and community spirit.
The building itself is stunning—a harmonious blend of Norman, Gothic, and later medieval styles, with soaring arches, finely carved stonework, and beautiful stained glass windows that catch the light in mesmerising ways. Particularly noteworthy is the Jesse Window, a glorious burst of colour and storytelling in glass, and the magnificent medieval wall paintings that offer a rare glimpse into the Abbey's past.
The sense of peace that fills the Abbey is profound. Whether attending a service, listening to a concert, or simply enjoying a quiet moment in the nave, visitors often comment on the welcoming and reflective atmosphere. The Abbey grounds and adjoining cloister garden are also beautifully maintained, offering a peaceful spot for contemplation.
The small museum attached to the Abbey is well worth visiting, with informative displays covering the history of the site from Roman times through to the present day. Volunteers and staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and clearly passionate about preserving and sharing the Abbey’s story.
Throughout the year, Dorchester Abbey hosts a wide range of events—from music festivals and art exhibitions to local community gatherings—which bring the building to life in...
Read moreIt was great to visit the Abbey Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul or Dorchester Abbey as it is better known . If for no other reason, it was the Bishopric of one Saint Birinus since 634 when he arrived and the Abbey was founded 55 years later and dedicated to Peter and Paul and Birinus himself . Now, Birinus could be described as a posh Saint Cedd who drew the short straw and got Essex whilst he himself got Wessex . I must say before I get called names, I myself hail from the wonderful Dagenham and would have it no other way . Well, both these heroes of the cloth gave it their best shot at guiding the locals to the light . There is a shrine to Birinus here today and I believe it holds relics of his . He himself successfully converted King Cynegils and baptised him perhaps with a little help from Saint Oswald King of Northumbria . There are some great wall paintings in here and also some great stained glass . There is also a union flag here which has a very interesting though tragic tale to tell . I personally loved a very simple wooden cross hung against a whitewashed wall . Simple is often the best in my opinion . Outside it is very picturesque and peaceful as is the village and surrounding countryside . There is a memorial on a wall to Sir Winston Churchill which states the great east window was restored by American friends of Dorchester Abbey . I enjoyed my visit and believe you will too if you...
Read moreDorchester is so quaint and picturesque - even in December. The Abbey is incredible, you have to see it in person to experience its grandeur. I only saw this when we were leaving but as you enter the Abbey, on the right hand side a little further in is a board with notices. There is a page that says if you have a smart phone, you can listen to a guided virtual tour as you walk round. This will give you a much better understanding of the history behind the Abbey if you haven't had a chance to research it before you go. There is also a darling little cafe called Lilys a short walk away which serves deliciously fresh food and drinks - a great place to go to for a cup of tea and cake to round off the afternoon. (The bathroom is rather quirky and made us giggle - if you grew up in the 70's or 80's it will definitely bring back some...
