There are not enough stars available to properly state just how magical a place Guy's Butterfly House is. What an absolutely joy-filled experience.
We didn't book in advance, but that was not a problem.
Technically, we're talking about a very large poly-tunnel in a beautiful countryside setting. What is in that structure is a veritable wonderland of beauty. You soon forget about the heat when you are surrounded by free-flying exotic butterflies of many varieties.
In the surrounding foliage, you can see the entire life cycle of these magnificent insects unfolding before you. From females laying the eggs, to newly hatched caterpillars, to caterpillars hungrily munching on the plants of their choice, to chrysalises hanging from leaves and twigs, to newly emerged final form magnificence.
"Guy" is on-hand to point out the fine detail and answer questions with a genuine passion and an absolute wealth of knowledge on the topic of lepidoptery.
This is a must-see location and a must-have experience. A delight for adults and children of all ages. I urge you all to make the trip and see it...
Read moreA really enjoyable half hour at Guys Butterfly house. Loads of butterfly's all over the place with pictures for description to help you identify the different species. One person in our party has mobility issues but was fine walking around the area on the gravel as it was level. The one point to note was the access from the car park, not at all wheelchair friendly. You park up by the stable and walk along a flat concreted area past the horses, but then there's a narrow grassed path, steep and twisting down to the butterfly House. We made it with a wheelchair, but it took a lot of strength and determination (we went back up the slope backwards in the rain which was OK) so, if you are taking a wheelchair or someone with mobility issues just be aware that although it is possible, it will be difficult depending on your own strength and determination. Despite that we are glad we went and enjoyed seeing the eggs and the caterpillars and the...
Read moreNot the easiest place to find (down a long bumpy track behind the Equine Centre - very little signage). It was smaller than I was expecting, but it was stuffed with butterflies including some large blue ones. The owner was knowledgeable and helpful, pointing out caterpillars, chrysalises and favourite perching points. It was quite humid (for the butterflys benefit, not ours :-) ). There were posters to help you identify the butterflys, several of which landed on me as walked about. Best to go in a group as the minimum charge (£10) was a tad high for one person for what was there. Parking was free. A "session" is 30 minutes and that is about right - you will see everything and be ready to go...
