Amazing. Brings back many memories of how things used to be. Not a bad truth be told. The day was really good, plus you could actually get A worth while brew of tea or coffee on the train, that actually was really good. Plus if you wanted to. You could slide the little window open, remember those?, and get A memory whiff of the heated steam that whizzed back past your carriage. The scenery was Loverly, and you could get off the train at any of its two stops and do your own thing. As it's only A 19 mile track one way out and one way back. Plus there is A regular hourly service until knocking off time. You really have to admire and respect exactly what these dedicated volunteers have achieved through hard graft and public support via generous donations. This really is A magnificent salute to those volunteers who through pure determination and dedication, have kept A little of our her stage FULLY operational for the benefit of all of us, young and old. THIS seriously knocks those geek thumb twitching games out of the ball park folks. Why? That's simple...these are REAL trains driven by REAL people, and it's an education worth experiencing isn't it ladies and gents?😊😊😊😊 As there is no substitute for the real Mcoy. Try it for yourself, and savour the experience, and watch those memories come...
Read moreThis was our first visit to the South Devon Railway and I was attending a driver experience day. From the moment we arrived the staff were polite, attentive informative and nothing was too much trouble. A special mention must go the footplate crew that provided me with the driving and firing experience , Alan the driver and Will the fireman . Both took the time to explain to an enthusiastic amateur the multiple tasks required to successfully run a steam locomotive. After explaining to said enthusiastic amateur they then ( gently) supervised me both driving and firing a 1934 built Steam Locomotive. What a class act they both are and an absolute credit to the railway ! If you are thinking of a driving experience I would thoroughly recommend doing it at the South Devon Railway. I have visited many preserved steam railways over the years and I would rate the South Devon as one of, if not the best. This was also the opinion of the guests who attended as part of my day. The railway runs through beautiful scenery and in the modern world where everything can often be busy and frantic it was wonderful to be transported back to another time. Although this was our first visit it will definitely not be our last. If you are thinking of visiting you won’t be...
Read moreCan I say first that I appreciate any volunteers who help to bring a bit of nostalgia into our lives, love steam railways, however having parked at Totnes main railway station, and having to climb the stairs over the bridge to the other side, lift wasn't working, found we still had quite a walk before getting to the steam railway, seemed never ending, took us a good 10-15 mins, maybe more but we went at a steady pace. With regards to the actual train journey, was ok, not a lot to see, runs along the river dart to buckfastleigh, which is a better place to park and is free which we didn't know about as had to pay over £6.in main station for all day ticket. Nothing much there though, has a cafe, gift shop, train stopped there for nearly an hour but I think that was because we went on the 1.05 pm so guess they had an hour for lunch. Had an earlier train 11.15 but although we thought we had got there in time for this one ,missed it because of the long walk.so went to the cafe just across the track, that was ok, also has a little farm next to it for kids, didn't go in so cannot comment on that.was a good day though, sun stayed out which...
