West Wycombe Park, cared for by the National Trust, is a true jewel in the Buckinghamshire countryside. Built between 1740 and 1800 by the fascinating and controversial Sir Francis Dashwood, the estate reflects an extraordinary blend of Palladian and early Neoclassical styles. Every façade of the house offers something unique: the west portico, inspired by the Temple of Bacchus, is considered Britain’s earliest example of Greek Revival architecture, while the east pays homage to the iconic Villa Rotonda.
The interiors are just as striking. Visitors are treated to rooms decorated with frescoes reminiscent of those found in Rome’s Villa Farnesina, creating an atmosphere of opulence and theatrical flair. Yet it's the wider parkland that truly captures the spirit of 18th-century romantic landscaping. Classical temples, follies, and even a mock naval battle lake scatter the grounds, with highlights like the striking Roman horseman statue — an unexpected find originally from Pinewood Studios.
The history of the estate is inseparable from Sir Francis Dashwood himself, infamous for his role in founding the Hellfire Club, whose antics in the nearby West Wycombe Caves add an intriguing (and slightly scandalous) layer to the visit. Although the Dashwood family still owns the surrounding estate, the house and gardens have been under National Trust care since 1943, ensuring its preservation for future generations.
West Wycombe Park is generally open to visitors during the summer months, and also serves as a dramatic setting for weddings and events. It is less crowded than some of the larger stately homes, giving visitors a more personal and relaxed experience.
In short, West Wycombe Park is a stunning and atmospheric day out — perfect for those who appreciate architecture, history, and beautiful landscapes steeped in...
Read moreEven thought the house was closed, (spring time) I still really enjoyed my time visiting here! We used the map provided by the National Trust guide at the kiosk, and ventured around the grounds for a good hour. There are alot of benches on the property to just sit and enjoy the beautiful scenery. There is alot of natural wild life as well, and alot of points of interest just in the house gardens. We didn't get a chance to walk along the main road to see all the old village, but just across the road we went into the caves and just above it is the church and Mausoleum which is super easy to walk to from the main NT parking lot. Definitely recommend spending the day at this village! (Bring your...
Read moreBeautiful day out, lovely grounds with nice walks in a well maintained park and around the lake. The house on the grounds looks amazing, you can visit it as well if you purchase the combined ticket for park & house. We were happy to just walk around and admire it from the outside. Sadly no caffee shop on the grounds and the only thing missing was that cup of tea or some refreshment option on a sunny day out like we've had (perhaps some pop up shop would do the magic?) However we found The Orchard shop on the main street afterwards, with its relaxing coffee shop and enjoyed a lovely cuppa and a cake over there. In overal the West Wycombe estate was an amazing place, well...
