Very poor service at the café today...wanted a sausage roll for the granddaughter...staff said it was too early for the sale of sausage rolls...11.20am..!! .so grandaughter was disappointed and reluctantly decided on the kids food box..this was to include drink crisps biscuit and choice of ham or cheese sandwich..she decided on ham and staff went off to the kitchen to collect the said "food box" including ham sandwich.... UNBELIEVABLE BUT TRUE..staff returned from the kitchen saying NO SANDWICHES were available to go into a kids food box ..! WHAT KIND OF CAFE SERVICE ARE YOU PROVIDING WHEN YOU CAN'T RUSTLE UP A SANDWICH OR SAUSAGE ROLL AT 11.20 IN THE MORNING...??! ...DIABOLICAL...!! My granddaughter was upset ..and humiliated ...as was my wife...we had drinks and a scone and left. On leaving the café a customer who had witnessed this event approached my wife and asked if our granddaughter was ok as she knew she was upset..! .SO COME ON CAFÉ STAFF....UP YOUR GAME...provide the basics... CHILDREN ARE YOUR NEXT GENERATION OF CUSTOMERS......CUSTOMERS ARE WITNESSING YOUR POOR SERVICE and commenting on what they see to their friends and families . Today's poor performance has already been passed on to our friends and family by a very upset 8 Yr old and disgruntled grandparents...BTW...sausage rolls were on display as we were leaving 20mins later ! UNBELIEVABLE!😔

UPDATE After speaking with Thea...( Manager )...we were assured that the ""sausage roll and sandwich availability "" before 11am would be brought to the attention of the staff involved so hopefully everyone will be able to benefit from this basic request. We wish to Thank the staff on duty at our recent return visit for the kindness shown to our granddaughter and for the garden pass gifts for our future visits... WYNYARD HALL CAFE AND GARDENS... WELL DONE...

Very poor experience today. Disappointing choice unless you want a sandwich or a pie. If you order a pie you can have salad and Coleslaw. If you have a sandwich you get crisps. However, you can't have crisps with a pie as "we don't do that" even though they add them with tongs? Ordered a child's ham sandwich and they brought cheese, good job he isn't allergic to cheese. Virtually all sandwiches had cheese in them and we asked if they could make a plain ham sandwich but the answer was no all sandwiches are pre-made. One of our party was coeliac and the choice for GF food was almost non-existant. The queue was very long as it was busy but the hot drinks were being prepared half way down the queue so by the time you had paid and got to your table the hot drinks were virtually cold.

Loads of young staff who didn't seem to have very much guidance from any senior management, shame as it seemed completely chaotic.

We will not return unfortunately

Update:- So as can be seen, I was asked to call them to allow them to understand the problem and help. Unfortunately, I did this but the person was not available. I was told however, they would call me back. That was several days ago now, so this cements my original complaint. Sorry Wynyard, I gave you a chance and...

I am writing on behalf of my son and daughter in law who have returned having visited the gardens. They had a cup of coffee each (out of a press button machine and served in a paper cup) and shared a piece of cake. The bill was £21.Whaaat!@%! I hear you cry. The reason is that the only exit offered by the cafe is through the Gardens and entrance fee is £6 each, mercifully they didn't charge for their baby daughter. They are visiting us from their home in Taipei and unfortunately didn't read the signs which the manageress told me were displayed stating the charge. The manageress asked me if they had told the person serving them that they were living somewhere else. The answer was no, shock had set in and they left. Its good to know that we are in the Covid crisis together and let me assure you that I have no complaints against the staff. The same can't be said about the management, penny pinching, money grabbing, greedy and customer unfocussed spring to mind. I spoke to the Duty Manageress who told me she didn't make the policy but that she would get someone to call me and explain. I will let anyone is interested know the outcome. In the meantime be aware that the prices of food and drink do NOT include the compulsory purchase of...

We made a 2-hour lunch stop at these beautiful gardens on the way home from a coach holiday, and it was a real treat! There were over a hundred varieties of lovely roses in the walled garden, all of them clearly numbered, and also pergolas, water features, and herbaceous borders filled with colourful flowers. The gardens looked very well maintained, and there were benches and picnic tables. I loved the woodland walk. The paths were a bit steep and uneven in places, but they were well signposted. Was amazed how tall some of the trees were, and along the route there were temples, a lovely view of the hall, and a children's trail with cute animal characters and an alphabet puzzle to solve. The café was quite expensive, but the food looked good quality, and it was hard to choose from the wide selection of delicious looking cakes on the counter! I enjoyed a tuna and cheese melt with crisps and coleslaw, followed by a raspberry and fig frangipani and a latte. Some nice homewares and gardening gifts in the shop. There's also a small garden centre and clean toilets. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. I thoroughly enjoyed our visit and would happily come here again.

Fantastic substitute for Alnwick Garden. Lovely walled garden with cascading water and calming fountains. Many very interesting plants and loads of roses. Can not imagine how it is when in full bloom! A lot of places to sit down and relax or have something to eat or drink. Also two dining places available where you can enjoy really tasty treats. Woodland walk is not difficult one and very nice. Stream, bridge, plenty of well maintained grass and features to keep children engaged. Tickets are valid for a year and not overpriced. Really worth visiting! Smell of the roses is amazing! Many varieties of them and it is difficult to decide which one is nicest. It does not happen very often to see so many varieties gathered in one place. Really impressive collection. When going for woodland walk beware of Giant Hogweed. Looks lovely but extremely dangerous plant. Please check my pictures if you do not know how it looks like. Really tempting to approach it and hide underneath for lovely fairy tale pictures. Do not be fooled!

The cafe at The Rose Garden is the ideal spot during the day. The offer is simple and wholesome with an emphasis on quality. A reason to visit is the location beside the beautiful walled garden. There is a lot of free level access parking. The cafe area is light bright and modern and the outside seating is perfect on a sunny day. Whilst not child unfriendly the clientelle tends towards the 40+ demographic without children.
