Ayeaha! Ayeaha! The place needs clearly better marking of direction and the trails. This was my first time to Echo Mountain. At the entrance, the direction map was all defaced or graffiti. I wasn't able to read it. I ended up following the sign stating the trail. It turned out Sam Merril trail. It was very sharp climb up and up. It got even more inclined as I went up. I ended up combing back down before the summit (about 1/3away from the summit)I had two dogs w/me one small and one big. The small one was heading down the hill to go back down. Usually I would hold her and keep going up ,but the hill was very sharp. I needed one hand free in case of falling or sliding down. I wish that I had hand globs on with me. I am glad that I had a long pants on although it was hot. There needs to be a much better improvement on the Sam Merril trail for the general public. The trail needed to be much more wider and more level on a few places so there will be...

Awesome hike for moderate or higher person's. Trail was clean and people were friendly going up or down the trail. Some of the trail does get pretty narrow at some spots but it's generally safe. Also, there are no trash cans so you'll have to bring down your trash down with you. At the top, there are several picnic tables and shaded areas. No bathrooms, so if you have to go either hold it or use mother nature's bushes to hide behind. Wear comfortable gym shoes or hiking boots, bring plenty of water and sunscreen as you'll be exposed to the sun. There isn't a parking lot so you'll have to park in the street and these fill up really fast, otherwise you'll have to park far. You don't have to pay for parking or to get in. All in all I'll be coming back here often as it...

For a nice hike to Mount Lowe I recommend starting here at Cobb Estate. hike to Echo Mountain(2.5miles) for a quick snack break. Then continue up Sam Merrill trail which will take you to Inspiration point(2.5miles) from inspiration you follow the Fire Road signs directing towards Mount Lowe(2miles) . The hike from Inspiration point to Mount Lowe is the most strenuous part of the whole trail so keep in mind you’re exerting the most energy towards the end of a new beginning or might i say the half way point. As an experienced hiker it takes me 4 hours to complete the above ~7.5 mile hike.

Hope you enjoy! Check out ALL TRAILS app for a more detailed step by step recording of the trail that you can save to your device for...

Sam Merrill trail to Echo Mt was a nice short hike. 3 hours max, add time for picnic at the ruins and meditating at view points. Saw blue Jay's, squirrels, a garter snake, gazillions of lizards, swallow tail butterflies, bees, several types of wildflowers and angelic cloud formations. It was a hot day. Saw one mountain biker and several trail runners. Trail is well kept. If you are a regular hiker, poles not needed. Not a lot of shade, so a hat and sunscreen are recommended. Probably okay for kids over 5. Saw some peeps with their dogs, they looked like locals.
