Echo Mt. Is becoming my favorite place for hiking. Sam Merill trail turned out to be unique hiking. Once I passed the facility with aluminium roof, the challenge begins right away.It is very stiff inclined and narrowed trail. It turned out this is easy part.Once I passed the electrical wire towers, the challenge is even greater. The rocky slippery elevated path is scary to be honest. At first try,I was slow and methodical on the climb. The trail itself is not that long I would say about 150 to 300 yards. I climbed it with my two dogs. On the second hiking I weared bicycle helmet. A rock slide is real possibities. If anyone hiking w/two persons it might be safer to have one person go up to the top.By the way,the top is asphalt road. This is to avoid rock slidding.Belive it or not climbing is easyier than climbing down.Going up use your hands much as possible. Combing down, make it short steps.Dig in you heels.Make sure one foot is secure before the other foot is lifted. Most important of all ,do slow down.It is great experience in relatively safe and short distance. As far as I know there is no other places offer something like this. One more thing, I want to thank the park staff for putting a new signs of map at the entrance. Take...
Read moreThis is one of my favorite hiking trails area. I typically do the Echo hike, and have kept on going past Echo to do Inspiration Point a couple of times (it's a lot more challenging for me). These are the trails I'm most familiar with, although I am aware there's other trails around. For Echo, I love that it's challenging enough both when I am easily winded, and when I'm in better shape. I feel I get a great workout in general. There's some railroad relics to see, and interesting pit, stairs, and an Echo cone once you reach the top. There's a great view of the valley, and you can see LA far in the distance. There's plenty of great angles for very picturesque backgrounds. It's fun jogging back down, but if you have bad knees like myself, expect a lot of swelling and to ice afterwards. Also, it's a pretty busy trail, specially later in the morning and you see various plp with their doggos (we take 2 dogs of our own). If you get there early enough you can find parking easily, but if not, you get a nice...
Read moreThis was a really chill hike. It offers a decent challenge, but nothing a lazy, sedentary, guy like me couldn't handle. The views can be pretty breathtaking at times. The street parking was also easy. We'll definitely be back to see how much more of the hike we can do, with more time.
When you pass the gates, it's going to be a quick 2 minute walk, you want to look for a small sign, on your right, for the trailhead. It can be easy to miss if you're not paying attention.
Shade is VERY limited, so it should go without saying that water and sunblock ate even more-so important for this hike. Don't forget to bring a bowl for your pup. They're gonna need it.
The hike is all incline and at it's widest points can only accommodate 2 people, shoulder to shoulder. The majority of the trail is extremely narrow. Bring good shoes and keep your eyes...
