History on full display. A strange place to find a sub, but it was the birthplace of American atomic energy. A museum in the park offers a reminder of the incredible technology and drive of man to achieve what seemed to be impossible. Museum guide was a retired Navy vet who spent his career living under the surface in a nuclear submarine. Good stories!

This is one of the coolest things to stop and enjoy the history. I’m so glad I was able to pull up attractions through Google maps so that I was able to take my kids to see this. If you’re ever driving through, I highly suggest checking this little spot out. There is also a sign towards the entrance that has info on the numbers on the mountain!

I was present when the Hawkbill launched from Mare Island back in 1969. My father (who has passed) worked on this boat. It was such a fantastic surprise to see her sail, in Arco Idaho. Thank you Harvey for the great tour you gave us. It felt like a family reunion.

"The Devil Boat" is the conning tower of the nuclear submarine USS Hawkbill (SSN-666). The nick name was inspired by the hull number. This is sort of an unusual site, it is in a small local park with just the conning tower sticking out of the ground. They also have a torpedo nearby. There is also a very tiny museum which was closed. I'm not sure when it is open. If you've never seen the conning tower of a submarine, you should definitely go (if you're...

Weird.. I was back in town to get propane after camping in the desert overnight, and low and behold there was the sail of a submarine seemingly sticking up out of the ground.. I had to take a closer look.. Submarines are usually not found in the middle of the desert but here it was, and with such an awful number 666.. I took a few pictures and looked around at the exibits, before going to find propane. Interesting is all I...

Wow just wow! We saw this sub passing through and had to stop. Well actually it just the top of a sub. The rest is not really underground. Glad we did because we met the nicest veteran who gave us a tour and told us some amazing stories. Learning about the history of the area and it's historical impact on the development of nuclear energy was really cool. Fun fact - every navy personal that works on a nuclear sub has...
