La Poza del Obispo in Arecibo is a breathtaking natural oasis that perfectly captures the beauty and wonder of Puerto Rico. Whether you’re a local or a tourist, this spot is a must-visit for anyone looking to experience the island’s pristine beaches and captivating landscapes.
This gorgeous natural pool, formed by a coral reef barrier, offers crystal-clear turquoise waters that are calm and inviting, especially on sunny days. It’s perfect for a refreshing swim or simply wading in the shallows while marveling at the stunning surroundings. The contrast between the serene pool and the crashing waves just beyond the reef is mesmerizing—it feels like nature put on a show just for you.
The golden sands of the beach are soft and spacious, making it a fantastic spot to relax, sunbathe, or enjoy a picnic. For the adventurous, the area around the reef offers unique spots to explore, and the nearby Arecibo Lighthouse provides an extra touch of local history and charm.
One of the highlights is the view of the imposing waves breaking against the rocks. On calmer days, you can safely enjoy the tranquility of the pool, but when the waves are stronger, the sight of them crashing dramatically against the reef is nothing short of awe-inspiring.
Do note that there aren’t many facilities nearby, so it’s a good idea to bring your essentials—water, snacks, sunscreen, and perhaps a beach umbrella for shade. Parking is generally accessible, though arriving early is recommended, especially on weekends.

There were two main negatives that we experienced. First, two swimming areas are available. The one is surrounded by rocks and thus gives the creates a small wave pool with mostly gentle water. It's great for families that have small children, and our visit found many such families enjoying that pool. The other area had a lot of wave action. That beach did not have a gradual descent but instead dropped quickly to waist deep where the waves were breaking.
Second, there were very high winds which affected both the waves and the sand. The winds did not throw sand so hard that it physically injured, but it did hurt and was fairly constant. This could have been a rare experience for this beach, so please do not reject this beach based on a single review. Do some more research if you are planning a visit to see if high winds are common at this location.
In all, it was a good experience at La Poza del Obispo, and many other families...
