I don’t know about you, but Christmas holds a special place in my heart! There's nothing quite like the magic of unwrapping gifts, even if I occasionally found myself on Santa’s naughty list and ended up with a lump of coal instead. Those little black reminders taught me to always stay on my best behavior!
Speaking of coal, I recently took my family to an incredible spot that dives deep into the fascinating history of coal mining. It’s a place that celebrates the hard-working miners who have been the backbone of America. Honestly, it’s a hidden gem that I can't recommend highly enough!
The kids loved the playground right next to the exhibit, and I was pleasantly surprised by how immaculate the bathrooms were—definitely a plus for parents! Best of all, the prices are super affordable, making it easy to enjoy a day out without breaking the bank. My family is already planning to return next week!
Just a little tip: don't forget to pack a sweater. It gets a bit chilly inside the coal mine, which is perfect for those hot summer days. And if you’re up for an adventure, you can hop on an amazing steam engine train for a ride with breathtaking views.
I hope my review inspires you to visit this fantastic place. Trust me, it’s truly a gem waiting to...
Read moreWe were all honestly surprised by how much we enjoyed this visit. Originally, the only reason we booked this attraction was because we found a Groupon and it was on our way home.
Learning about the history of the town and the history of the mining operation in the region was fascinating. We were most impressed and thoroughly enjoyed going into the mining tunnels in the mountain.
Inside the mine it is very wet, very cold, breezy and everything is covered in sediment from coal. As you ride into the tunnel on the mining cart you may get dripped on from water seeping through from the surface. There are also many shallow puddles throughout the mine. For these reasons I wouldn't recommend taking children of walking age who are still of an age where they may need to be carried. Their shoes alone (nevermind whatever they touch) will make whoever carries them filthy, and in general, if they don't tolerate cold and wet, they will be miserable.
The explanations of the mining operation and how it evolved over time was engaging, easy to understand for almost any age, and highly educational. The guides were patient, knowledgeable, humorous, and took plenty of time...
Read moreWe were here for the pioneer festival. I hadn't been here since I was a kid. Let me first say that the staff here is amazing! They all really know their stuff as well as how to treat customers! The food at the festival was good. The gift shop prices were fair. The tour prices were very affordable as well.
We took the train ride first off to a little scenic spot (pictured). The guide there was really great. He knew lots about the mines, area as well as other local towns.
We took the mine tour just in time for the pouring rain to hit. Luckily the gift shop sells hoodies! (It gets chilly down there).
After the cart ride down into the mine you get off for a walking tour. It's amazing to see the interior structure of the mines first hand. As well as learn what life was like for the Miners. The tour was very informative as well as entertaining. There were jokes, songs & a moment in the darkness. We got to explore several different part of the mine.
As I said all the staff were top notch! Thanks for a great time! Thanks for preserving our Pennsylvania history for future generations. We will...
