Nice little Drive In that's a real throwback kind of place. You need to know what you're in for going in, so temper your expectations. It seemed to staffed entirely by local high school students the afternoon we went in. They were all very friendly and happy to help, but obviously these aren't terribly experienced line cooks. Everything here is going to be slapped on the grill or tossed in a fryer, often straight from the freezer. The kids went for hot dogs and chicken strips, both of which came with a generous helping of fries and a coupon for a free dessert after their meal. They were perfectly fine. My one friend and my wife both went with the chicken parmesan sandwich while my other friend went with the pulled pork special. Both platers were extremely poor, resembling what you'd find in a high school cafeteria of yesteryear. With that said, I'm not quite sure what they were expecting. I went with the fried chicken basket. It was a much better choice, consisting of two huge chicken breasts that were fried just right, still maintaining their moisture inside their crispy, cholesterol-laden shell. It was accompanied with a pile of french fries and a small dish of institutional-style cole slaw. After lunch, everyone had desserts, and that's where this place shines. My peanut butter soft serve was delicious, and generously sized for a small. The kids loved their chocolate soft serve and slush puppy, and the generic "Flying Saucer" ice cream sandwiches were good as well. May's is your stereotypical old school drive-in style restaurant. Don't stray too far from burgers, hot dogs and simple fried dishes and you'll probably be okay. Prices are right, and service is friendly. There aren't a ton of choices in Ashland to eat, and if May's isn't the best of them, at least it is a...
Read moreAffordable quick service place. $27 for 3 combo meals that fed 3 adults and 1 small child, and had a good bit of fries leftover to take home. Food was GOOD we ordered two chicken cheesesteaks with fries and a drink combos and a burger combo with fries and drink. You seat yourself, place an order at the counter (menu is on a board above the cashier) and they call your number when it's ready. Tables and bathrooms were very clean. Parking plentiful and for it being lunch time on a Sunday there was plenty of seating available in the back dining area. They also have a big walk up window in the front so you can order ice creams and milkshakes in the summer months without going inside where the diners and food orders are being taken. The ice creams looked very good will be trying some desert items next time. Only giving 4 stars instead of 5 because if it is your first time coming it's hard to figure out how things work. There's no signs or paper menus to pick up to look at before you walk up. So hopefully this review will help other first timers know what to do! Despite lack of helpful (seating/ordering/pickup area etc) signs/directions and a bit difficult to navigate menu board, the cashier was super friendly and patient while we navigated the menu and had questions on what/how to order. I also love that they have soda fountain drinks and they serve them I'm Styrofoam take home cups! One of the only places left doing this. Keeps your drink super cold and for travelers is a benefit to bring your drink on the road after you...
Read moreMy food was great, my husband's and daughters however wasn't nearly as good. I got the Fried Chicken dinner and got 3 pretty huge pieces of chicken (a leg, thigh and breast) that was cooked to absolute perfection, crispy on the outside, tender and juicy on the inside. The fries and coleslaw that came with my meal weren't the greatest but I've had worse and let's be real, I was there for the chicken, lol. My husband got the cheese steak and it was a steak'um on a roll with a slice of cheese and peppers and onions and my daughter got the fish sandwich which was a tiny piece of fish very much like you would get out of a freezer meal or McDonald's. The service left a lot to be desired, it was mostly a very young staff who were more interested in socializing with each other than they were in working. HOWEVER, you absolutely Have to try their peanut butter soft serve!! It is DELICIOUS!! All in all, I was satisfied and if I was in the area again, I wouldn't...
