This is definitely the most worthwhile thing to do in the area, and one of the most intact historic houses I've visited anywhere. We had to call through the exhibition coal mine to set up a private (free!) tour - but it was absolutely worth it. Sam, our guide, was very informative, and used to be a history teacher so he knows what he's talking about. Hearing the history of how the Beckley family came to the area, how John Beckley was the first Librarian of Congress, and seeing the table where some of the signatures were collected for the Bill of Rights is just a small part of what the tour was all about. I grew up in the area, and in fact went to church right across the street for many years, and I'm so glad I was able to finally go inside and see this historic treasure for myself!

I didn't get to go inside but it was so interesting to know that my 4th great Aunt Jane Rapp Beckley was the 2nd wife of General Alfred Beckley who's father John Beckley was the first Librarian of Congress, a close friend to Thomas Jefferson and signed the Bill of Rights. You wonder what their lives were like and the struggles they had. I hope one day I get to explore the home my family once lived in.

The Wildwood House is one of the most historic sites in Beckley, WV. The Historical Society has an annual Open House with reenactment ent and house tours with refreshments. Great historical information. A can't miss event.
