We drove to Theodore Roosevelt Painted Canyon Visitor Center right around dusk. (The center was already closed but the restroom was open for us.) Right from the fence by the parking lot, it was a very nice view! If that's all you do, you still get some pretty landscape views. We found very unique rock and soil formations. The Painted Canyon Nature Trail starts a little walk down (the sidewalk) from the visitor’s center. The sign said the trail was just under a mile loop, so we started down the hill. It is a peaceful walk: a little steep in parts, but nothing too difficult. At dusk there were not too many people there. The trail was dry, but the rock and dirt formations around the area looked like clay! Easy to see how the warnings of “slick trail” after a rain would be accurate. Read moreThis was so awe-inspiring. The beauty of the canyon and all of the colors was magical. It seems to appear out of nowhere in a sea of nothingness. Then you can't believe your eyes! We were just there 2 weeks ago and saw a bunch of wildlife that is truly wild! A heard of wild bison came less than 100 feet from us. We also saw a heard of wild ponies and a bobcat that was the size of our pitbull.pit bull. We didn't get to walk the trail very far because we ran into the bison, but that was okay with us.
