We drove to Theodore Roosevelt Painted Canyon Visitor Center right around dusk. (The center was already closed but the restroom was open for us.) Right from the fence by the parking lot, it was a very nice view! If that's all you do, you still get some pretty landscape views. We found very unique rock and soil formations. The Painted Canyon Nature Trail starts a little walk down (the sidewalk) from the visitor’s center. The sign said the trail was just under a mile loop, so we started down the hill. It is a peaceful walk: a little steep in parts, but nothing too difficult. At dusk there were not too many people there. The trail was dry, but the rock and dirt formations around the area looked like clay! Easy to see how the warnings of “slick trail” after a rain would be accurate. There is informative signage and arrows to keep you on the right track. The outside maps give you a good idea of the terrain. I definitely recommend this unique and...

This was so awe-inspiring. The beauty of the canyon and all of the colors was magical. It seems to appear out of nowhere in a sea of nothingness. Then you can't believe your eyes! We were just there 2 weeks ago and saw a bunch of wildlife that is truly wild! A heard of wild bison came less than 100 feet from us. We also saw a heard of wild ponies and a bobcat that was the size of our pitbull.pit bull. We didn't get to walk the trail very far because we ran into the bison, but that was okay with us. If you haven't been to the painted canyons, it is a must-see on...

We deliver RVs across North America and every time we're in North Dakota we stop we marvel at The view and if it's a nice day we walk the 2.8 Mile trail down into the canyon!! The one thing I would say about the rest area is there really is not enough parking and yet there's just kind of a field right behind it that they could have used but chose not to. If you're driving by stop take it in you...

Amazing picturesque views without hiking just from the ledge, but it gets better as you go down the trail. The trail descends rather steeply with log steps and lots of side trails off the main mini-loop. The views just get better as you go down, though. Just make sure to watch out for Bison droppings! We didn't see any when we were there, but they clearly frequent the place.
