We weren't able to stay at Cottonwood Campground so on our way out we decided to stop at the Painted Canyon rest area to stretch our legs for a bit & get pictures. We were here during a weekday afternoon with our big 135 pound older puppy in our 43' 5th Wheel RV. Plenty of parking space even for our rig & our long bed dually. We were able to walk our pup around the viewing area before sitting on a nicely shaded bench while the hubby went inside the gift shop. The rest area is shared with the Painted Canyon Visitors Center for Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Lots of parking, great views, hiking trails, a staffed information desk and gift shop (hours vary), and bison often visit. Last time we were there, we had to wait for a herd to cross the rest...
