The perfect place to enjoy a warm sunny day.
Ample parking, decent washrooms and a good boat launch.
Speaking of boat launches, there is some sensitivity to the environment because there are inspectors that look at every waterborne craft to make sure they don't bring in any, or leave with invasive species.
Last time we were here last summer, we had issues with working around the Canada geese, and the poops they leave behind. This year was later than when we visited last year, and the poops seemed to be eradicated. Lots of green grass and free of "natural obstructions" this time...
There are many elevated BBQ grilles for briquette cooking. I noticed that some came to the park with smokers or hollowed-out portable BBQ hulls that took advantage of the grassy areas that didn't have permanent BBQs. They were cooking with briquettes in those converted BBQs and making the best with foldable chairs.
The views are beautiful over the north side of the lake and the park is connected to the trails on the other side of Electric Ave. You can beat the heat by exploring the many tree-covered trails and the beautiful falls area. Lots of fun to explore and see the old railroad trestle from different angles.
This area was a treat to find, and gives me many reasons to...
Read moreI visited Bloedel Donovan Park recently and enjoyed my time there, but I do wish it wasn’t so packed at different moments throughout the day with parking, the traffic due to construction, and finding good sitting areas away from others. I really loved the scenic outlook of Lake Whatcom on the water with views of mountain ranges and clear skies. Very picturesque! I appreciated the snippets of wildlife that frequented the park during my stay and it was quite nice being shaded and lying underneath older trees to beat the heat of the day. The park seems rather accommodating to interests such as: boating, swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding, and lounging. They even have a volleyball court and a playground for those with the energy for it. Dogs are allowed, but only in designated areas and if you love a good picnic, they have plenty of seating for it. If you are wanting to take a boat out, please be mindful of tracking in and out invasive aquatic species, as there are city members who discuss these precautions before entering the water. From the looks of it, it seems like a popular park, so there is that to consider as well. It’s definitely worth the time to visit and spend a few hours there, no matter what...
Read moreYesterday, I went to Bloedel Donovan Park with my two sons. We affectionately call this park the "park where you can throw rocks." Only once I logged on to Google did I realize the name of the park. What a mouthful. Interestingly, the park seems to have a notable paucity of logs or lumber, given its name sake. That said, the children enjoyed their time very much. I appreciated being able to check wifi over the City of Bellingham's free service. We went panning for gold at the beach, and all we found was boring rocks, and an old bandaid. There is often a decent amount of goose droppings on the fields and beaches, but this can be turned to your advantage if properly twisted into a game of dodge the mine. The last time we came to this park, there was a big fundraising event for animal shelters, with dogs everywhere, so that raised the game's stakes significantly. Overall, this is a great park with a bunch of different areas to burn different brands of pre-schooler energy. 4...
