I visit this place almost weekly for recreational walking and for a time, I attempted to fish. Alas, I am not a good enough angler to fish with natural bait, let alone the artificial bait required on this Class A trout stream. Regardless, this park is beautiful. I know some folks may see the tall weeds near the water's edge and think that it is unsightly, but please know that this is for the betterment of the waterways. The environmental experts have said that having tall weeds near the water's edge helps with filtration of all kinds of unnatural items from the already compromised water. The dam is already such an impediment on the waterway that I don't want to see it taken away, so I'd rather see the weeds and get to keep my beloved dam. This park is a restored WPA beauty. Do marvel at the beautiful dam and imagine that upstream from that dam was actually a stream-fed swimming pool that people used to use. It apparently filled up with silt so quickly that they abandoned its use, but that's why the waterway is so bowled above the dam - there's concrete below in some areas. In general, the city does a great job keeping up with the park. Also, please, if you're going to feed the fish or the ducks/geese, don't feed them bread. Buy duck feed. (Tractor Supply, 15 lbs. for $19.99). Bread is harmful to the birds. Enjoy the park. Please...
Read moreWe used Illick's Mill Park for a wedding shoot in August 2015. The park's architecture dates mostly from 1930s Works Progress Administration efforts to improve the area along the Monocacy Creek. Since then, other features have been added or well-maintained, including a footbridge.
The mill itself, once home to a conservation organization, may be available for rental for parties and wedding receptions. The mill building is ADA-compliant.
Parking is available close to the pavilions as well as ina lot on the south side of Illick's Mill Road. A regional trail (Monocacy Trail) connects the park with other recreational opportunities and parks all the way to the Lehigh River and canal towpath a few miles to the south.
The Monocacy is a limestone creek and is stocked with trout by the fish and game commission. Fishers enjoy the creek from early April on. The park is patrolled by game wardens, so have a current permit if you plan to bring a...
Read moreThis used to be the best park in the valley. Long gone are the days of riding our inner-tubes down the falls to the bridge and back again. Long gone are the days of walking across the rock damns without falling in. Long gone are the neat stone walls that used to line the creek on both sides. What's there now is a sparce grass lawn, overgrown grass on the hill by the train tracks, slimy stones leading up to the westside falls pavilion, padlocks all over the suspension bridge and geese droppings everywhere which causes you to play hopscotch as you walk through the park.... Oh and a ugly mean sign announcing basically not to do anything but breath and walk through the park. If you want to see the falls, which will always be pretty, park behind them to avoid the long walk through the park avoiding all the geese droppings. That way you have less...
