There's really not much to do here.. The entrance & exit are dangerous for drivers & walkers alike. It's a wonderful place to stop & eat lunch or to take your kids & explain how & why the Herring fish travel up & down for their life cycle & why it's protected & can NOT be fished at. Many people (unknowingly) in the past used to just use a net & take the fish right out of the shallow/narrow stream but, too many people did that & the Herring population diminished to near extinction so, I'm glad we can all agree that catching the Herring is off limits & that restoring this ancient land was necessary. I still wish they'd level the ground around the entrance & frankly the ENTIRE STREET "ANCIENT WAY" NEEDS TO BE WIDENED & REPAVED.. as it's going to get people killed & I fear for my wife & children's lives everytime they drive down there.. which is nearly everyday !!! God Bless...
Read moreGreat little park with vast view of the Cape Cod Canal and Sagamore Bridge. Herring Run Recreational Area offers more than meets the eye. Enjoy watching the herring climb the fish ladder, have lunch at one of the many picnic tables while enjoying the beautiful views. Stop into the visitor center and learn about the history of the Canal. Bring your bike and ride the canal road. Fish the banks for stripper. Learn the fate of the 52 submarines lost while patrolling the waters during World War 2 at the U.S.S. Trout Memorial. Most just pass by but there’s much to be seen and learned at this little gem. This one gets my “Pure Butter” rating for packing a big punch for a relatively small area. Off season is best to avoid mucho humans but anytime would be a good time to take a moment and breathe...
Read moreThe park was clean as always. There was additional personnel cleaning and patroling which is comforting these days. Signs were in place reminding people to be respectful of social distancing guidelines.
The people there were courteous and polite. It was busy and the parking lot was full. Despite this fact, we were easily able to remain socially distant from others. Most people we walked by during our walk were polite and respectful of social distancing guudelines. This was also the case where we sat.
There was plenty of places to sit and relax. Shade was easily attainable as well. I recommend heding down anytime for a bike ride, walk or maybe to go fishing. Even just sitting and watching the boats go by, having a conversation with someone can also be fun...
