This park is named for Harvey Eugene Oyer Jr. (March 31, 1926 - December 18, 2010). He was a businessman, civic leader, and Mayor of Boynton Beach in 1960 at the age of 34. He was known as "Mr. Boynton Beach". He was directly related to area pioneers. He was the great grandson Captain Hannibal Dillingham Pierce, one of the settlers who salvaged the coconuts from the Spanish ship wreck in 1878 and when planted gave Palm Beach it's name and he was the grandson of Lillie Pierce Voss, the first white child born in Florida between Jupiter and Miami. His son is a children's author who has written books about the adventures of his father's great uncle Charlie Pierce. Boynton's oldest insurance business bears his name in the historic downtown. In honor of Oyer's military and civic accomplishment the park was named for him in 2011.
This park is perfect for you are into boating and fishing. The Harvey E. Oyer Jr. Park has 4 boat ramps on the Intracoastal Waterway, across from the Boynton Beach Inlet. The park also has a Coast Guard Auxiliary building, picnic area, playground, restrooms, and a large fishing pier with several decks. There is free parking for vehicles and trailers.
The park is also home to the Florida Fishing Academy formed in 2006 as a non profit after school program created by a Captain Rich Brochu, a former police officer to get at risk youth out onto the water and fishing. He teaches life skills to students, encourages them to volunteer, and rewards them with a fishing trip.
