The park ranger here "Greg Brown" was very aggressive, belittling, mean, and overly rude to us during our brief visit. We walked into the park to capture a sunrise, but the park was apparently still closed at that time. There was a small closed gate to block incoming traffic, but I didn't think we were doing any harm by walking in (around the gate) as it's simply an outdoor space. We had the intention of capturing the sunrise, and unfortunately the sun doesn't rise on the park's opening hours. We were only about an hour before the parks official opening time. While at the overlook taking pictures of the sunrise, "Greg" approaches us and begins yelling that he will call the cops as we are "trespassing" by entering too early. He begins getting physical with us, even so much as pushing me and my camera tripod back at one point when we don't respond to his initial threats. He kept escalating the situation by being overly aggressive and even screaming profanities. It was a very scary encounter. I'm not sure why this guy thinks that nobody is allowed to enter "his" natural park unless it's on his time. He was acting like a bear would if someone had threatened her cubs. Somehow, he was overly offended that we even dare enter "his" park early. Yes, he did refer to it as "his" park and "his" territory. Honestly, Greg Brown should not be a park ranger. It's clear he is very angry and unstable person, and for whatever reason, he choose to direct that anger onto us for little to no reason that morning. Anyone with understanding and humanity can appreciate capturing a sunrise, but running into an overly aggressive man with a serious power complex, will ruin even the best...
Read moreThis is a pretty good sized place to park and hang out. There's a lot of spaced out picnic tables, a bathroom, and a nice-sized gift shop with more than keychains and snacks.
It's important to note that this visitor center is more rustic than you'd normally see. The bathrooms have no sinks and there are NO trash receptacles anywhere. You have to pack out what you pack in. (None of the parking areas down the hill have trashes either, so be prepared).
This is a great/awful place to begin your hike around the Ceasar's Head area. It's great if you love painfully difficult hikes (and I very much do), because you can't get ANYWHERE without going downhill and you have to come back up. It's similarly awful because you can't get ANYWHERE without going downhill and you have to come back up.
If you don't want to kill yourself getting to Raven Cliff Falls or the overlook, you'll definitely want to drive about a mile N of the station to the next parking area. I believe there is an even easier trailhead further north on Geer Highway, but I've never...
Read moreI am a native Floridian, so before my visit to this park I had never seen mountains before. The drive up the mountain to the visitor center was a bit scary to me, but it was completely worth the view from the top. It was absolutely beautiful and breathtaking. Even if you've seen many mountains, I'm sure you would enjoy the view and it's worth a stop. We also had fun going along the path, a little past the viewing point, where you get to walk through a stone crevice. My four-year-old son thought that was pretty cool, though I was a little bit terrified once we got to the other side. The fencing along that side of the path was significantly less safe compared to the viewing area, so if you have children with you I advise extreme caution. As a person who has barely seen a hill before this, I was ready to get back to a safer area! Around the viewing area was very secure, though. We also visited the gift shop, which had your typical gift shop variety. The people working there were all...
