Caesar's Head is one of the most impressive Southern Appalachian peaks. It presents an extremely rugged face with lots of sheer granite walls and unbroken cliffs. While not very high, even by Appalachian standards, it does rise over 2000 feet from its base, being one of the major mountains along the Blue Ridge escarpment of South Carolina. This mountain is very imposing, and there is a state park on its summit, Caesar's Head State Park.
The overlook area was once Cherokee hunting grounds and the name may be corruption of the Cherokee word “sachem” or chief. Once on the overlook you are on the edge of a 400 million-year-old rock looking 3,000 feet down a gorge. It is always a dramatic landscape no matter the time of the year. Should you be fortunate enough to visit the overlook during the summer, you can watch thunderstorms roll across the upstate. Table Rock, Paris Mountain, and the surrounding mountains are all easily viewed from the overlook.
Devils Kitchen, is a side trail, just off the overlook that will take you down a narrow crevice between two boulders. The passage is only large enough for one person at a time. Once you negotiate the Kitchen you’ll see a side view of Caesars Head.
Wildlife is plentiful at Caesars Head. Birdwatchers will find 167 species of bird. Other wildlife you may encounter on the trails are black bear, peregrine falcons, and the endangered Green Salamander. In the fall, it is not unusual to stand on the overlook and see black bears migrating to the warmer side of the grade.
Every fall, thousands of hawks can be seen on their migration to warmer climates in South and Central America. From early September through the end of November, the Greenville County Bird Club keeps an eye on the hawks and other raptors along their journey. Hawk watchers have documented thousands of hawks in a single day with up to 300 traveling overhead at the same time. You might also see other raptors like bald eagles, kestrels, peregrine falcons, or turkey vultures flying along the same route.
This area provides about 50 miles of back country hiking with access to some of the best and highest waterfalls in the eastern US.
Keep in mind that freezing temps will make the landscape hazardous. Also, bathrooms at the visitors center may not be open. Been there, done that. It's along way to the next...
