Tunnel Drive is quite possibly my favorite place in Cañon City. Whenever I meet someone who is visiting from out of town, I suggest Tunnel Drive and whenever I have guests from out of the state, I bring them here. I have spent many, many mornings running Tunnel Drive (man, that first part will definitely warm up the ol' glutes) or just walking along. It usually isn't very busy. The views are spectacularly beautiful, especially around sunset. The trail is very well maintained on a regular basis. There's a great view of the Arkansas River as well as the Royal Gorge Railroad route. Apart from that first bit, it's an easy and enjoyable walk. I've seen all sorts of wildlife up on this trail, as well--all manner of birds, snakes, deer, bats, bighorn sheep and even a couple of tarantulas. The three tunnels are pretty cool. Especially the long tunnel ... it's fun to sing in.
I've had a lot of beautiful spiritual experiences up here. It's an environment conducive to soul-searching, introspection, reflection or just mere relaxation. And for me it's a daily place to get...
Read moreThis was a great hike. The trailhead is nice with plenty of parking and a vault toilet, but more trash cans would be a great addition. There is a giant one right by the sign but people have still thrown trash and cigarette butts all along the parking area. The hike is perfect for all skill levels. There is one steep hill at the very beginning followed by two miles of flat, well maintained trail. All of the tunnels are within the first quarter mile or so. After that it's beautiful views of the river and mountains with a good view of the train tracks below. The only shade on the trail is in the tunnels so be prepared for the sun! When reading about this trail on a website it was described as point to point but it is in fact an out and back: two...
Read moreMy wife and I discovered this scenic trail a couple of years ago. It provides great views and a nice easy walk for those cooler summer days. Recently we visited again only to be visibly accosted with an amazing amount of pet waste (like every foot or so) on both sides of the trail for all of the incline portion of the trail. Pet waste bags are provided and there are even several trash receptacles along the trail. Not that there's any excuse if neither were available.
We love taking our dogs on trails but are afraid that irresponsible people will cause more and more trails to be closed to pets. I really hope there's a way to address this without restricting pet access. :-( A significant fine and a week of poop...
