A place to be visited in Puerto Rico. The Salinas de Cabo Rojo two and a half hours from old San Juan are a unique attraction, it has very beautiful views from its checkpoint, and on its grounds you can see how the water turns pink depending on the time you go. It's an impressive place. This is just a unique place to explore. I read somewhere that they are only open Friday - Sunday, so make sure it's open before venturing out. It's highly suggested that you visit (if possible) on a bright and sunny day as overcast days will not make the pools appear pink, but grayish instead. It's interesting to just walk around and see the salt accumulation around the pools. You'll spend less than an hour here and the lighthouse is just a bit further down, don't miss that. Just so you know, it's posted "prohibited to fly drones" here. The lady who attended us at the Interpretive Center was very attentive and friendly, she explained to us why the water is observed in pink color and how the birds and which specific species are those that go from one continent to another making stays in Las Salinas. The truth is...
Read moreWe visited Cabo Rojo Salt Flats on a Monday, we drove 3 hours from Rio Grande, the visitor center was closed but there's nothing to see there. You can see the salt flats and the lagoon from the observation tower thats right opposite to the visitor center. The salt flats trails are closed to cars due bird nesting season but there are two gates further down the road where the second gate has a small entrance which you can walk roght through and can be right next to the salt flats. There was a hint of pink color. Continuing down the road you can visit the Playa Sucia beach and the lighthouse right next to it. The road to the beach is muddy, and filled with potholes, so if you have a low car you need to be careful. The lighthouse itself is not open but you can still visit the lighthouse grounds and the cliffs nearby. The beach is fairly busy but you can easily find a spot to swin in. The water is clean enough and the sand is not sticky. No changing rooms or showers though. You can also stop in Ponce to grab a bite and drive-by the downtown. Really good one-day...
Read moreThis was an amazing site to see, and there is a nice welcome center with interesting artifacts and information. You can actually buy the salt in the welcome center along with other trinkets like the seaglass necklace I bought. There were many reviews that talked about the color not being pink and the awful smell. I can tell you that when we went, there was a faint smell of sulfur at the observation tower, but it was not bad at all. When we drove past that point, it got a bit swampy, and the smell was stronger, so the wind direction will be a factor in how strong the smell is. The road was washed out and unpassable at a certain point, so we could not drive all the way to the end. The pink color was not visible when we were there. There is a display in the welcome center that tells you that it is the water that has the pink color. My guess is that you would have to be there right after the tide goes out, but before the water evaporates, however, I forgot to ask the very nice lady in the center. We were...
