We brought some out of state friends to this beach (our first time here, too) and it was a fantastic choice. (This is the beach in Malibu, not near San Diego.)
There were perfect waves to teach a teen how to boogie board, and the water was warm enough (in late July) for my daughter to swim in a swimsuit, without a wetsuit. (The rest of us weren't willing to take our chances. California waves even in summer are often quite cold.)
The waves picked up almost with perfect timing after an hour and our friend's son had gotten comfortable with boogie boarding. It wasn't crowded, the sand was smooth, and there was one alert lifeguard (although he had a fairly large area to cover). The only drawback was no restroom or shower water...
