First attempt to hike got cancelled due to rain. I attempted the day after and I'm so glad I tried again. The view is worth the hike. Aside from the mud and the rocks I had to sift through, there was also a small stream of water I had to balance on logs to cross over. It's not difficult, but it was slightly tricky not getting my feet submerged in rainwater.
Park by the train station and cross the tracks to start the hike. The signs are small so if you're not paying attention (me!), you'll go on the wrong trail for about 5 minutes before you find out you went the wrong way.
At the train station are public bathrooms, however, on the 2nd day I visited, it was broken and a sign said to walk up the steps and down the stone pathway towards the big green and brown building to use the restrooms there. They are real, flushing toilets (!) and sinks with plumbing. So, use that one if you...
Read moreOnce you cross the tracks and enter the woods, this trail is to the left of the info sign. It had a very faded barely readable sign that said Mt Willard.
Very nice hike for an unusually warm May weekend. Be aware there are 2 stream crossings. There are rocks and logs to cross, but they might be covered by the water height. Take note of the season and rainfall, you may need to submerge your entire boots into the water to cross (could be 6"+ depending on how high the stream is).
Beginners may need walking poles. As an unfit hiker, it took 1.5 hours to reach the top, 1 hour to go back down. I wouldn't recommend for kids under 5 because the steps and rocks to climb are very large for short legs.
There were 2 spots that had ice covering the trail on the last .25 miles going up....
Read moreJust over 3 miles that took us 1 hour to go up and 1 hour to descend with a small group of mixed level hikers. Hundreds of cars parked as far as the eye can see on a Saturday in October at 11am. Single file all the way up because of the crowds and crowds and crowds. Some hikers had no concept of what hiking is and how to do it while others tried to elbow their way past people without so much as an “on your left” or hello because they didn’t like other humans being there. Beautiful beautiful views at the top for a very easy hike. When we got back the train was stopped and we got to walk around it and hear its horn! My friends said the bathrooms were gross. The guy working at the little shop was very helpful and friendly. Would not recommend doing on a...
