We have been going to Fry's Spring Beach Club for over 10 years and actually moved into the neighborhood to be closer to the pool. The club is indeed from an era gone by and few places like it exist ... anywhere. There are three great pools: a baby pool, a mid-sized "play pool" and a full 50 meter lap pool. You can bring your newborn and relax under a canopy of trees, your toddler and be assured that many eyes are on him/her, your tween and give them some freedom to roam, and your teenager for a healthy age-appropriate, diverse group of peers. Add to it a vibrant community of open-minded, intelligent, engaged adults who are friendly and civic-minded. Lastly, if you are looking for a swim-team that focuses on skills-development in a friendly but healthy competitive environment, there is no better in the city. Often the winner of the sportsmanship award, FSBC is also perennially in the top tier of teams and is usually coached by a cadre of amazing present and former UVA swimmers. While there are cheaper options (and maybe some with more amenities), FSBC is well worth the admission and will leave you with the satisfying sense of connecting with a tradition in Charlottesville that is...
Read moreFSBC is a little slice of heaven and is one of my very, very favorite parts of Charlottesville. The inclusivity is obvious as soon as you walk on the premises. The friendly spirit of a diverse group of people is evident and celebrated through many avenues such as swim team, social gatherings, membership scholarships and day to day pool life. If kids tire of swimming, there are so many other things to do on the grounds.
The FSBC summer camp welcomes campers of all backgrounds and 30% of attendees are provided scholarships. FSBC works closely with International Neighbors as well as nearby Title 1 schools to serve those who might otherwise not be able to attend summer camps. The director and counselors are comprised of a diverse, fun, kind group of individuals and are an incredible asset to the camp. It is not elaborate or fancy, but it is a place where children enjoy “old school” fun such as a gaga pit, swimming, volleyball, ping pong,...
Read moreKids and I were here on Thursday 7/27. The smaller pools had dirt, grass and bark from mulch in the water. Not cool seeing little kids swimming with DIRT. The net used to CLEAN the pool was just thrown haphazardly on the lawn where people can trip over it. Is there a reason why these pools were dirty??? Don't they CLEAN THE POOLS DAILY? BUT THE LAP POOLS WERE CRYSTAL CLEAR. I also noticed the lifeguards are too busy chewing gum and talking to each other, AREN'T THEY SUPPOSED TO BE WATCHING SWIMMERS? I was surprised to see the condition of the building. How much do members PAY to belong? I'd be disappointed in what my money is paying for. The snack bar is great, BUT it takes FOREVER to get the food for as many people standing behind the counter. Wish to see these improvements, but at this...
