I read the book Hell's Half Acre about the Bloody Benders last year, so when I planned a genealogy trip to Kansas, I knew I had to stop in at the Cherryvale Museum to see the Bender hammers. I was the first visitor in the new building, and I basically got a guided tour of the entire museum. However, I get the feeling they interact with all the visitors in the same way. I was amazed by all the work that went into each display, from the interpretation on the story boards to the artifacts themselves. I learned more about Cherryvale than I had planned to, and I'm not mad about it. The group volunteers I had the pleasure to meet were absolutely lovely; their pride in their town and museum was evident, and I could have chatted with them all day. My wife and I passed through Cherryvale and we are so glad we did. The tour guide was so amazing, she told us all about the town and the museum. How kind of her to be there on her Sunday afternoons.
