We stayed at the Leatherock Hotel for 3 nights over the weekend while in Kansas for our nephews wedding. |The good: the room was clean and homey. The Owner made sure we had everything needed so we didn't have to pack shampoo, toothpaste, etc.|She also supplied a coffee machine since we opted out of the breakfast.|The bad: the hotel was more in a construction faze than I anticipated but it was quiet when we were there. I expected for the price that I wouldn't be walking through construction. Apparently the renovations have been going on since 1998 I assumed it would be closer to completed. The WiFi was terrible until the owner finally reset the modem.|The ugly: Upon our evening arrival the check in process was awful. We spent an hour at the desk trying to pay for our room. Had both of our cards locked up by the bank because of multiple attempts. Finally had to go to the ATM in town where we got charged an extra 6 dollars for using a ATM from a different bank than ours. Finally fell into bed at 11 skipping dinner as everything in town closed by 9. |Side note: Cherryvale has little to no reception for AT&T phones. All in all we had a comfortable place to lay our heads at night. I would not stay there again due to the awful check in experience, the rooms being overpriced for what you got, and for being in an...
Read moreWe lived in nearby Independence for years, moved away several years ago, and came back for the wedding of a friend's daughter. This place is unique. It's been in a constant state of renovation for as long as I can remember. The hallways and lobby have had construction detritus in them every time I've ever set foot inside. I was surprised at how little had changed in 3-4 years. That said, the restored rooms are nicely done, clean, and tastefully decorated. We had a similar check-in experience as another reviewer in that the hostess could not get her credit card machine to work. In trying to calculate the hotel taxes, it displayed a crazy price 200 to 300 times the room rate. We also ended up paying with cash. Also would agree that the wifi is weak in the rooms and the AT&T cell signal is iffy or nonexistent. (But if you're unplugging or low tech, this is OK.) Just have the right expectation that this is a Ma and Pa lifetime project that probably never will get finished in Smalltown, Kansas. The host couple is as nice as can be. Very accommodating in serving breakfast...
Read moreI needed a place to stay near Thayer, KS and I found The Cherryvale B&B. I'm very happy I found their website and was able to secure a room. I was greeted at the door by Shirley and the hospitality began. Both Jim and Shirley made sure that my stay was relaxing and informative. From what I would like for breakfast to what was available in Cherryvale; and the breakfast was delicious.||When you come here you will see a work in progress, from the front door and throughout parts of the building. I felt this added to my stay because I love to see people creating things with their own hands. Both Jim and Shirley are very creative and talented people. Make sure you talk with Shirley about her natural lifestyle that keeps herself and significant other, Jim, so young looking and physically fit! Just Amazing! Also, ask Jim if he will give you a tour of his model train museum. The museum is a practical work of art. The planning and engineering of the track layout is extraordinary. Yes, it is also a work in progress.||I am looking forward to coming back for another...
