The Aztec Mill was essentially built by Lucien Maxwell, owner of the land grant originally acquired by his father-in-law and his partner. This mill was built during the Civil War and was used to mill flour to provide for Jiracilla Apaches and Navajos interred at Fort Sumner as well as others in the area. This is a wonderful museum in a town with a lot of history. The only bad thing about this place is that it's not open during the winter. If you're on a frontier history tour out here, make sure you visit nearby Chase Ranch, the Kit Carson Museum at Rayado, Fort Union, and the Bosque Redondo Museum in Fort Sumner. Read moreSo glad to have found this gem in the town of Cimarron. Two of my kids were asleep and we were waiting for Burrito Banquet to open at 11, so my daughter and I head here to check it out. We were greeted by a volunteer to enjoy the 3 stories of history of the area. You could spend all day in here and not soak all of it in. Loved the displays and going down to view the old mill.
