The Aztec Mill was essentially built by Lucien Maxwell, owner of the land grant originally acquired by his father-in-law and his partner. This mill was built during the Civil War and was used to mill flour to provide for Jiracilla Apaches and Navajos interred at Fort Sumner as well as others in the area. This is a wonderful museum in a town with a lot of history. The only bad thing about this place is that it's not open during the winter. If you're on a frontier history tour out here, make sure you visit nearby Chase Ranch, the Kit Carson Museum at Rayado, Fort Union, and the Bosque Redondo Museum in Fort Sumner. The Billy the Kid Museum at Fort Sumner is also good. The Old Fort Museum not so great. But, the grave of Billy the Kid and, more importantly, Lucien Maxwell is located there.

So glad to have found this gem in the town of Cimarron. Two of my kids were asleep and we were waiting for Burrito Banquet to open at 11, so my daughter and I head here to check it out. We were greeted by a volunteer to enjoy the 3 stories of history of the area. You could spend all day in here and not soak all of it in. Loved the displays and going down to view the old mill. If you are in the area, drop by and both kids and adults will find something that interest them in this old mill. It is free to visit, but please leave a donation to keep it around for future generations.

Free museum packed full of so much history! I wish I had more time to spend here. If you are in the area, it is definitely worth a stop! I learned a lot about the area and discovered quite a few fun stories! This is also a stop on the Cimarron walking tour of old Town. (They have maps available at the museum)

An interesting place. The mill is quite old. It is the only mill I remember where the wheel is inside. There is a number of different items. There are gems and a number of Scout patches. There is a cast of the Tironasorus Rex track found at Philmont. One of the few tracks in the world. Also historical items including Kit Carson's saddle. Admission is free, donations accepted. The curator is very open to answering questions about the items...
