Have not traveled to many National Park Service sites since before Covid so I'm not sure if this NHS has fallen into disrepair in the last two years or if was never in good shape? Restrooms were a disaster and very little availability to see anything Harriet Tubman related other than stories told by the park ranger. No access to either of her houses on the property and no access to the $1.7MM refurbished barn. A couple of pieces of broken China was all that was displayed in the visitors center. There were however multiple donation boxes and multiple requests by the ranger to donate cash. I''m not sure for what purpose since there's no remaining possessions of Harriet's besides her bible.
Also it was a little presumptuous of the park ranger to ask my wife and I in front of a large tour group if we were here only to get our Passport of the US National Parks stamped. Since there was only one park ranger on duty access to the visitors center and restrooms were closed until the end of the guided tour which was nothing more than standing in the yard next to Harriet's house and listening to the park ranger repeat stories from books written about Harriet.
My rating of a 2 instead of 1 is for the animated story telling. Also, get to this NHS early....they...
Read moreThis attraction, which is right off the road a short drive form downtown Auburn is made up of a Visitors Center and two houses. One house, once a refuge for the elderly, can be visited as part of the guided tour. The other, Harriet Tubman's home, is currently being renovated.
The Visitors Center is just steps from the parking lot. Make it your first stop to pay for the guided tour and get practical info for your visit. If you can, I suggest calling ahead to ask for tour times, so you can plan your visit accordingly. There were a couple of people who showed up during our visit but missed the last tour of the day.
While waiting for the tour to start, you can check the exhibitions on the courageous and no-nonsense Ms. Tubman and learn about the extraordinary life she lived and the struggles she faced. How she managed to live to 90, despite all the challenges life threw at her, just makes her all the more remarkable! You will leave with such a tremendous admiration for her.
The tour leaders, a very lively and friendly couple, did an excellent job of telling the story of Tubman's life in colorful detail. The house currently open to tour is small but worth a visit. Parking...
Read moreVisited what should be an important historical park. Unfortunately, the park was underwhelming at best. A guided tour was available (fee required) by advance appointment. Museum was closed as the ranger was conducting a tour. Wait was about 10-15 before it reopened. The saddest part was the poor condition of the historical buildings ( 3 bldg) Nothing posted at two of three. 2 of 3 were gutted so one could not get a true feeling of what Harriet Tubman accomplished. Museum was somewhat helpful but I feel it didnt really do justice to what Harriet Tubman did. My visit occurred during an anniversary celebration of Ms Tubman. Great banners surrounded the entrance and were also hanging on all street lights on the way to park. Sadly, those banners were the highlight...
