There are stairs leading from the Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway up to the East Boulevard (main) level of the garden. At the edge of the East Boulevard escarpment stands a imposing statue of the philosopher poets, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) and Johann Christoph Friedrich (von) Schiller (1759-1805). On one side of the base of the sculpture is a quote from Schiller's play, William Tell (the Rütlischwur oath): Wir wollen sein ein einig Volk von Brüdern, in keiner Not uns trennen und Gefahr. [We want to be a single People of brethren, Never to part in danger nor distress.] On the other side is a quote from Goethe's Faust: Nur der verdient sich Freiheit wie das Leben, Der täglich sie erobern muß.
