Outstanding experience. We did it with our 4 year old and 20 month old. We were a little concerned about the younger one because there is no leaving early or taking a break. She ended up doing great.

Steve is a fantastic guide. He is incredibly knowledgeable and experienced, and very engaging. The displays and demonstrations are done excellently. The air tools are all quite loud, but that is also part of the experience. The ride on the air tram was very cool.

The ride up and down in the tiny car is very cramped, and I think could be hard for some. Thankfully it is only 2 minutes. I was a little anxious on the way down, and again, it ended up making for a better overall experience.

While you are waiting there are many interesting pieces of old mining equipment, train cars, log mills, and more. You can see the Cripple Creek gold mine operation right next door. We were able to watch some equipment while waiting for the tour.

There is a good viewpoint of the CC pit mine just up the road from the Mollie Kathleen mine. Definitely worth the 10 minute drive to cap off the underground tour and see the comparison with how operations are done 100+ years later.

If you are jn the area, don't skip...

The Mollie Kathleen Mine tour was a fantastic experience. It was entertaining and educational. The tour guide was funny and knowledgeable. I believe he said he was a 3rd generation miner. He was able to answer all of our questions.

The tour was 1 hour long. We descended 1000 feet underground into the mine shaft. We were crammed into a tiny cart for the descent. Once we exited the cart, the mine itself was very roomy. Along the tour, the guide not only explained how mining progresses but he also was able to demonstrate how different equipment and techniques were used. This part was loud. Cover you ears! In the middle of the tour we rode a short tram. At the end of the tour the guide gave us a history lesson about mining in the area.

Overall, I highly recommend this for anyone. We paid $25 per adult and believe it's well worth it.

Tips: The ground can be slippery. Wear good shoes. The temperature underground is very cool so bring a light jacket. The equipment demonstrated is very loud so bring ear protection it you have sensitive ears. They provide hard hats at the beginning of the tour. Explore the Cripple Creek Heritage Center before or after the tour to add to...

Held off on writing this for a while, but after hearing about the tragic accident and learning that Patrick was involved, I felt compelled to share how much this experience meant to me.

I went on this tour with two friends, and all of us agreed—it was the best tour we’ve ever been on. As a history nerd, I was blown away by how much care went into presenting the mining history of Cripple Creek. This isn’t some cheesy tourist trap; it’s a deeply immersive and educational experience.

Patrick was our guide, and he made the tour unforgettable. His knowledge, humor, and patience truly stood out, and it was clear he cared deeply about what he was sharing with us. One of the most impactful parts of the tour was when they demonstrated how loud the mine could be using actual mining equipment—giving us a real sense of what life was like underground.

I sincerely hope the tour reopens when it’s safe. The work they do to preserve and teach the region’s history is incredibly valuable. I’m grateful I had the chance to experience it, and I’ll always remember Patrick’s passion and presence. He made...

What an adventure! The Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine tour was an unforgettable experience, taking us 1000 feet underground into the heart of Colorado’s gold mining history. Our guide was fantastic—informative, funny, and super kind. He made the whole tour even better, and he even snuck us some extra gold ore along with the free pieces you get to pick from at the end! 😉 The tour itself was fascinating. You vertically descend 100 stories into the mine, ride an underground tram, and get to see gold veins in their natural state. The mining equipment demonstrations were really cool, and it gave us a great appreciation for what the miners went through back in the day. Plus, it’s only a short and easy walk underground. After the mines, I highly recommend heading into Cripple Creek town—the food there is so good, and there are tons of cute stores to shop around. It’s the perfect way to round out the day! If you’re in Cripple Creek, you have to do this tour. Highly recommend it for anyone looking to dive into Colorado’s rich mining history—plus, who doesn’t love free gold ore?!
