Walsenburg was called the "City Built on Coal" during the late 19th and early 20th centuries with more than 100 mining camps in the county. Learn about mining and the battles between the coal miners and the mine operators. Learn about Mary "Mother" Jones, a famous fighter for workers' rights. At 80 years old, she was arrested and incarcerated in this jail.
Learn the Walsenburg story of Bob Ford, killer of outlaw Jesse James.
The museum also displays detailed genealogical material for those searching for their roots.
The museum has a gift shop offering books, maps, other informational materials, souvenirs and keepsakes.
Admission is $2 or free if you are a member of the Huerfano County Historical Society.

Read moreI thought I had slipped through a time warp back to 1913. The kind, friendly people working at the museum showed me the cell where Mother Jones was jailed, the shovels and drills that the miners used hundreds of feet underground, and the books and magazines from the days when coal was king and Walsenburg was booming.
Next time I'm in southern Colorado on I-25, I'll stop again and absorb a little more history of the real old west that thousands of immigrant laborers lived through. I urge you to go there, too, and see and feel first hand what life in a mining...

The gentlemen minding the counter would not stop following us, telling us things he liked here, things we did not ask to know AS we're obviously turned away from him reading or talking to one another, and not allowing us to move about on our own.
