This is a wonderful museum that covers and often overlooked aspect of the Civil War -- the naval war. It is packed with fascinating artifacts, weapons, gear, memorabilia, and models that tell the story of both the Union and Confederate navies during the Civil War. It has two unique displays: the remains of the ironclad CSS Jackson and the gunboat CSS Chattahoochee. Additionally, it has mock-ups of the ironclad CSS Albemarle, ironclad USS Monitor, and the steam-powered sloop-of-war USS Hartford, which served as Admiral David G. Farragut’s flagship. They also feature a very impressive collection of Civil War flags from ships and forts involved in naval engagements. Outside of the museum is a recreation of the USS/CSS Water Witch, a steam-powered sidewheel gunboat that served with both the US and Confederate navies during...
Read moreAn interesting glimpse into a bygone era. A bit off the path but recommended for anyone with interest in American history, the American Civil War and Ironclads from that time period. The recovered remnants of the C.S.S. Jackson (aka CSS Muscogee) are housed in one entire section of the Museum. A metal framework outlines the missing area of the ironclad; the scale of which is surprisingly larger than one would imagine. Impressive life sized walk thru exhibits include a Union Ship of the day and a Confederate Ironclad and dock area. Numerous painting, artifacts, flags, and photographs make this museum a worthy excursion for those wishing to see a bit of 19th century Americana. Admittedly a Civil War buff, I spent a quiet and fascinating few hours getting a real "feel" for the navies of that era....
Read moreThe Port Collumbus Civil War naval Center is on Victory Drive in downtown Columbus, Ga. there are replicas of all kinds of ships and so forth here. Admission was like 6.50 per person, but when we told them we drove from all the way up North to visit they gave us the childs admission. It was pretty much a self-guided tour of the museum. they had real-life replicas of ships and iron clads. there was a movie of what it was like to work, sleep and live on an ironclad. it also highlighted the roll that Georgia played in the War. There were all sorts of flags and battle standards of the Navies involved in the war.
It featured the salvaged wreck of the CCS Jackson as well as a part of the turret from the USS Monitor. Plus they're building their own full size replica of a blockade runner USS / CSS...
