Love the view and wide sidewalks. Great for rollerblading, jogging, getting fresh air, leisurely strolls, etc. Approximately 2.25 miles if you start at one end and walk to the far end and back. Also convenient that there are EV Chargers at the pier. Not much parking at the pier, but you can easily find free parking at one of the nearby lots.
Downsides: Located in between the North End (nicer part of Tacoma) and the main city which attracts all kinds of people who can be so incredibly rude when unwarranted. Plagued with teenagers drinking in their car (especially at the pier), wannabe gangsters who are always catcalling and "cruising" up and down the strip (which is illegal), and folks driving by bumping their terrible rap music; with no consideration of the fact that my pre-teen daughter does not want/need to hear that crap. Girls can be nasty and scantily dressed in the summer and live to make snide comments to strangers... But hey, it's Tacoma so expectations can't be...
Read moreI've been there almost every weekend this summer with my kids. Parking is usually available. If the lot is full you can park across the street. The pier is open 24 hours so you can fish anytime , but the parking in the lot is only open until 9:00 p.m. The police come at 9:00 to close the lot but they do tell you if you want to stay to just park across the street.
The pier itself is great, big, wood, long, wide, built in benches to sit, cleaning station, and a small public bathroom at the pier entrance. Most of the people you'll encounter on this and the pt defiance pier no matter what time, are some of the nicest, coolest, and laid back people I've had the honor to meet. Young and old take an interest in helping those who need advice on how to fish or what type of bait to use, but also it's always easy to just chat there. They're very friendly and down to earth. Totally...
Read moreSign says parking is closed 9pm to 6am. We thought we were safe to park as we got there at 8pm to do some squid fishing. We went to leave at 840p and found that the parking had been chained closed. No way to exit safely. The pier was open 24hr, but good luck getting out of the parking lot. We had to do some creative off road driving to get out, but this is unacceptable and unsafe. I understand there have been concerns about that area. It is very dark at night. It could use a couple of extra lights in the parking areas for sure, but to lock people in is dumb. There was not any clear sign that says they would lock up the parking lot by a certain time. Tacoma Metro Parks...
