Some very scenic views offered. “trail” is a bit of a stretch for most of this. Very tall grass to press through. Spots where every step is going around a rock. This is not a family-friendly trail. Plenty of going up steep boulders or steps as you go up and down large hills.
For a more experienced hiker or just two adults, this is going to be a nice way to spend several hours. My family and I could not complete it. Had to turn around about 40% of the way through.
All that said, I’m sure most people would enjoy it for what this region has to offer. Great scenic views. Plenty of colorful wild lizards. No snakes on our hike. One seemingly dead tarantula on a giant boulder.
If you’re going during the summer, set aside plenty of time to complete this as you’ll need to stop for...
Read moreWas looking for a decent hike and found this spot. I’m used to bigger mountains living in Utah but this hike was good. Not much elevation at all but very good scenery. With the elevation being only at around 500 feet total, you get a great workout with it being 6 miles, if you do the entire loop. To get to the canyon, it’s about 3.5 miles. There are a few spots with shade but the majority of it is open so in the summer, make sure you have plenty of water. Didn’t see any snakes, just a bunch of colorful lizards. Supposedly longhorns and bison roam the area but I didn’t see any on my trek. There are signs of them from their droppings. Overall, this hike was very enjoyable for the area. I would definitely recommend and will likely be going back to spots in this...
Read moreAnother beauty of the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge is the Bison Trail. Nice wide open space with lots of views from bison , deer, birds and snakes, lakes , dams, gorge and mountain. Well marked terrain except the last part of the loop on French lake. Terrain have some elevation a little bit rocky on some parts. No shades. Bring minimum of 1.5 liters or 3 bottled water if hiking in summer. Don’t be fooled of the overcast weather. Wear SPF creams and hoodies for sun protection. This hike has a distance of over 6 miles with no restroom from and to the trail head. Medium hike for 50 and above of age.
I enjoyed the hike for the views. All photos were taken during the actual hike with overcast weather in...
