Hiked this at sundown in late August and this is perfect way to end a day filled with sitting in conference rooms. Took about 45 minutes to get to the top. That includes losing the trail a couple of times. We would have like to spend more time bouldering around the summit but with no moon and a shaky feel for the trail back decided to cut our time on top short. It was a about a 20 minute trip back to the parking lot with about 80% of it on the trail. Great view, experience and even a bit of a workout. Highly recommend. Especially, if you have kids that like to climb on rocks. Just keep an eye out for snakes. Didn't see any but I'm sure...

It was a wee bit hot out, think hell blowing on you with a blow dryer. So come in the cooler months if you don't want to sweat profusely because it stings your eyeballs, and they're trying thank you for the beauty you can't blink away. Every turn is nature competing for "America's next top Mountain." I recommend lots of h20, maybe 90210, nevermind Dylans dead.. bugspray, a camera that isn't your phone, leave the phone in your vehicle. But what if, you'll be fine, just bring a disco ball and champagne,if lost. DNR ain't...

One of the busiest trail of the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge is the Elk Mountain Trail. Trail is rocky , a lot of rock hopping inclined hike. Beautiful view from the entrance until to the summit . Bring a map because there are different trails going up to the summit(we got lost, glad that I have downloaded the map on my phone. Great views at the top and lots of wildflowers in July of 2023. Visit early to get a parking spot. Photos were taken during our hike during an...

Lots of opportunities for climbing around and going off path. Trail is sometimes unclear and you might go the wrong way a few times where it looks like the trail splits into a few different directions but you figure out pretty quickly that "oh this looks dangerous, there's no way this is it" and then you go back and go the other way. It's a fun bonding experience. Bring at least one person with a decent sense of direction just in case.

Such a delightful adventure. It took me over a hour to hike to the top, but only because I stopped many to times to soak in the amazing and beautiful views. This was in the dead of winter! Can’t wait to return in the spring! The trail was pretty easy to follow, however, I did lose the trail on the way down simply because I wasn’t paying attention. There were quite a few loose rocks along the way so be careful of those.
