Hiked this at sundown in late August and this is perfect way to end a day filled with sitting in conference rooms. Took about 45 minutes to get to the top. That includes losing the trail a couple of times. We would have like to spend more time bouldering around the summit but with no moon and a shaky feel for the trail back decided to cut our time on top short. It was a about a 20 minute trip back to the parking lot with about 80% of it on the trail. Great view, experience and even a bit of a workout. Highly recommend. Especially, if you have kids that like to climb on rocks. Just keep an eye out for snakes. Didn't see any but I'm sure...

Read moreOne of the busiest trail of the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge is the Elk Mountain Trail. Trail is rocky , a lot of rock hopping inclined hike. Beautiful view from the entrance until to the summit . Bring a map because there are different trails going up to the summit(we got lost, glad that I have downloaded the map on my phone.
