While walking at West Guth Park this morning, I was crossing the small bridge spanning the pond when I looked down and noticed a water drainage grate, in which around 30-40 fish were stuck heads-up, gasping for air. The excess water from last night's rain had apparently pushed the fish toward the drain, where their bodies had become lodged, and it was only a matter of time before the water receded and they would be left to perish. I desperately attempted to lift the grating but it held firm. I then attempted to grab the fish with my hands, but they were too slippery. I finally found a stick and was able to dislodge some of them but it was taking too long and there were too many of them...their breathing became less frequent. Just as time was running out, I spotted a Parks & Rec employee to whom I explained the situation. Within a matter of minutes, he arrived at the bridge with three additional men, and they promptly donned gloves and got to work freeing the fish one-by-one and tossing them back into the pond where they swam off to live another day. This may seem like an insignificant act to many, but to me, and to each one of those fish, it meant the world! These kind-hearted men certainly deserve a...
Read moreThis is a fun place. Back in 1976 as a sixth grader. We had our end of the school year celebration the whole day at West Guthrie Park. (What a day that was) I remember a bunch of kids running up and down the hills, and coming up this one hill. There was these tall trees, and overgrown with high schrubry. So we boys decided to do a little exploring in the schrubry, and found a clearing with shade. As we were looking around. We came across this dirt bike hidden in the bushes. We yanked that bike out. And we tried are darnedest to start it. But we couldn't get it to start. So we decided to take turns and push this bike around the park up and down the hills. We weren't the only school there. There were tons of us kids all over the place. I think the school that was there when our school was there was Tuloso Midway. The teachers back then let us run wild. I'm surprised I even got on the right bus back to my elementary school. That was a fun filled day from swimming, to all of the sport activities. Everyone got along so well time flew by, and it was time to head back to Central Park Elementary. Next stop was South Park Jr High. Go Black Knights....
Read moreLove this park. Not always busy but most of the time it is. Havent had any issues with parents everyone is nice. Its great that its the soft ground so my baby can walk without stumbling. The pool here is great as well the only thing i personally dont like is you cant let your kids go by themselves even in the shallow part which makes it hard if I don't want my baby in the sun to long and chose to sit at the tables which isn't far from the kiddy pool. My suggestion would be they need to put a sail sunshade so more parents can sit on the side or in the shallow without worry that their little ones dont get too heated/sunburn and follow their rules because they are sturn about it. But for 30m to an hr its great to cool off and burn your kids energy and its only a few dollars to get in. The staff is nice and...
