Absolutely amazing and impactful. It was extremely rich with information. Though the subject of the place can seem overwhelming to endure, it is not. It does not feel like something you “should do” for an uncomfortable good lesson. It is massively impactful, emotional at times, and an amazing representation of some of the worlds recent history that can leave you awestruck and breathless.
We make a point to go to a musuem or cultural destination twice a month, and this is hands down the most impactful experience dripping with both entertainment value as well as substance. A must see. Don’t be scared. You some how come out better than you were when you walked in without knowing it. I love how you really live and feel the pre WW2 time line though the final resolution into the late fifties. Also does not just cover the Americans experience (us) but how it affected many countries thoughout the world, the good bad, ugly and costly, selfish and deeply down right demonic evil choices that were made, to create a whirlwind tonado world wide storm of genocide. Something we should never forget. Racism sucks. Do it. Go. And also opt for the audio...
Read moreI first heard about the Holocaust museum a few months ago and had been building up my courage to visit. My father was a Colonel in the Army and we were stationed in Germany during my teenage years. Our trip to Dauchau was one I will never forget. The St. Louis museum was striking beautiful. Inside, everyone I came into contact with was wonderful. The guide, Bill was so knowledgeable and impressive-I had to ask him to repeat what he had said many times because what he said was so important that I didn't want to forget anything. Towards the end of my visit, I noticed a beautiful, petite lady giving a gentleman a private tour and i was sniffling reading a sign- she walked over to me, put her hand on my shoulder and asked if I was OK. I mumbled yeah and then she asked if she could give me a hug. I said yes, next thing I know Bill is by my side handing me kleenex! Then I found out that sweet woman was Helen, the director and curator. Wow! Such compassion. Anyway, Bill informed me I was only 25% through the museum! I plan on going back weekly until I make it all the way through. Thank...
Read moreI have been to Dachau twice, and visited a few other Holocaust museums. This newly renovated museum is very well done. If you choose to take the tour, do go back and take your time reading through the self-guided displays. There is much more to unpack that the tour won't cover. Spent almost two hours, taking my time, did not take the tour but was close behind and listened to some of the narrative. I know the staff means well, when they barge in verbally, but I found it disruptive while trying to read and reflect on my own. There are great artifacts from local survivors! There are no bathrooms in the museum so you have to go back out to the lobby. Currently nothing to see in the lower level. To enter the museum you have to go through metal detectors/security and I was asked if I have weapons. No. I don't. It seemed too much, but the Jewish community (and others) have been targeted for so long. It was a reality check. The showcase of STL survivors is really demonstrative of the spirited survivors and their stories.I pray none of us have to navigate such horrific...
