We rented 2 lots 98 & 100 in Area 5. The wash out in that area was horrible, uneven and muddy. Site host older white/gray hair lady was nice one day then rude power trip the next. There was no way with the angle, washout etc of the site to gual the poop toter up the hill, so I backed into the area beside the asphalt so the hitch would be lined up and closer to hook up the toter. She came around and must have had her eyes closed to not see that we just drug the toter up 2 seconds before she stopped her vehicle and must not have saw all the bright colored sewer hoses on the ground either. Proceeds to say you can't park there. I said I'm not parking in emptying my tanks and driving them up to the dump station. Then she said ok are you going to move it we don't want to kill the grass. I said WHAT GRASS THIS IS MUD AND ROCK. I at this point got a lil more vocal and said I'm emptying my tanks and making several rounds to dump. Then she says ok well I'm your site host we just can't have you parking there. I said I'm not parking I'm dumping my tanks like I have said over and over. Turned around and walked away. Obsurd!
Now the sites. 100 wasn't too hateful needed lift on driver wheels and a big nose drop. However site 98 just stay away. The angle of drop from the road was excessive. I used curved wheel wedges that raised me over 4" on driver side and my front hydraulic Jacks fully retracted still left me 1.1° out of angle left to right and 1.3° front to back. It was not a fun 4 days. Almost went to Lowes to buy wood, but we dealt with it because then our stairs wouldn'thave worked (already removed the adjusting legs to barely have it work). The other part is the asphalt is so narrow on the site that even hugging the driver side as much as possible our stairs came right down on the edge of the passenger side, then you had to make the last step down into "not grass" but mud and rocks.
Being a resident of the state it is sad to see this and many other lots in that area made this way. It would be nothing to add a LEVEL layer of asphalt and instead of site host thinking grass is going to grow with a tree canopy, put down 2' & 3's stone with crush n run on top. I know that area floods sometimes, but the rocks woul make it a much more desirable stay. Or do the square railroad ties with the stone only there like area 3 etc.
Just beware of area 5 and some of area 4 as there are many...
Read moreOur review is a bit different as we had to make a trip to the local ER. We were in area 3, spot 77. It was decently shaded as described upon reservation online. Great spot if you have kiddos as it’s right by bathhouses and playground. Bathhouse showers are not great, but clean. Great area for a walk. Hubby finally figured out the fishing there. Fishing with crickets and catching nice sized Brim. Catch & release so others will enjoy catching them too. We had to go to wicks water world pet store for crickets as that was the closest place that sold them, but he was happy to finally catch something there. He caught 13 in about a 2 hour period. The pool is amazing (minus the teen lifeguards only being concerned about flirting and chatting with the other lifeguards and not minding their posts or keeping eyes on the people in the pool) the size of the pool is great and is one of a very few tn state parks that still have a pool. Our 11 year old was playing at the playground in area 3 during a light rain shower & went down the slide and went straight into the hard plastic border around the play area. She had the breath knocked out of her & bruised her back. We had absolutely wonderful campsite neighbors. Several of them saw it happen and was there within seconds. They continued to check on her before/after our ER visit, & treat her like their own child. It meant the world to us to be around such caring people. They were in spot 79 & they were the browns. They made a tough weekend much better just by being such wonderful people. We hope no one has to go through such events, but hope everyone has such wonderful, kind camping neighbors as us during their visit there. The ER (which was only a few miles away) really surprised us at how quickly we were out of there considering it was a Friday night & they were packed when we got there. Everyone was SO nice &...
Read moreUpdate on the park from this past weekend. This was our first time staying in a cabin at Cumberland Mountain State Park. We have stayed in cabins in other Tennessee State parks in the past and were hoping for, and expecting, a similar experience, which is to say that the bar is not set too high in terms of posh amenities, but that everything would at least be as advertised. Oops! I’ll preface the rest of this review with this; our review is very specific to cabin #7. This cabin should NOT be available for rent until it has either been completely renovated, or bulldozed. We entered the cabin through a broken storm door, which should have been our first clue. There was not a clean surface in the entire kitchen. There were no clean dishes, no usable, clean cookware, and the oven appeared to never have been cleaned. The walls in the kitchen and bathroom were spattered with who knows what (toothpaste?), and covered in dust bunnies and cobwebs, and the floors were cracked, broken linoleum, covered in tracked-in dirt. The h-vac struggled to maintain any temp, running continually, blowing cold air from every vent. Were it not for the old, electric wall heaters, which I’m sure we were not supposed to use, since all the knobs has been removed, it would have been a cold, noisy existence the entire weekend. I’ll end this tirade on a positive note. There was lots of free firewood, the shower was clean and had good water pressure and plenty of hot water, the towels were soft and fluffy, the bed was comfortable, and we absolutely love the park. We will simply NEVER rent a cabin again without first checking it out, and certainly will never rent cabin #7 without knowing that it has...
