Flamenco has reefs at right and left side, I like the left side before you reach the Sherman tank at shore. Use google earth to plan your reef path. If you want to see Sea turtles you need sea grass bottoms, go to Tamarindo beach or Merlones Beach to swing with them. Some companies have services to go by boat to some good snorkeling additional area offshore, is a good example Culebrita. Beaches like Zoni, Resaca, Punta soldado and Brava are beautiful beaches but not for snorkeling. Always see the NOAA page for marine conditions, it's the Caribbean weather changes without warning, Culebra is extremely safe but use common sense with your belongings, bring your scuba gear (clean it with baby shampoo as anti fogger), quickest way is by plane, ferry do the job but need some planning ahead, the sea has seasons like you have in the states (mosquitos, jelly fish, high waves, currents, rain showers, sea grass, seaweeds) all are part of the experience...in general, please don't write bad reviews if you don't do your home work first. Best months are: June, July and August (but lots of people); Fair months are: March, April, May; Bad months are: September to February (few crowds). Flamenco is a protected area, the only guest house is flamenco beach houses (3 story bldg. with several boogaloos. I don't recommend this but is right on the beach; I always stay on Bahia marina hotel and arrange transportation. Also Culebra has great small hotels, guest hoses, B&B. If your Cruise ships ports are in San Juan, your best option is to pre-book air tickets from Isla grande airport (10 minutes taxi from port), the flight is 20 minutes, at Culebra airport take a taxi or rent a jeep drive 5 minutes to flamenco. I don't recommend do this by ferry if you have a tight schedule. There are some other options at metro area like Escambron beach (blue flag), Condado beaches, isla verde beach, if you want some beach time. Flamenco Just started to charge for parking and a suggested donation for beach maintenance, Any questions...
Read moreThe beach is nice and clean...The sand is also very fine...The day we went was not crowded so...Very nice... You will need transportation from the ferry terminal to the beach...That cost us $3 per person plus adult entry fee that's $2 (kid is free). The beach is not big. The reason why I gave 3 stars because 1. Ferry service. It was terrible. Only 1 ticket counter opened. The ticket counter has ZERO idea how the boat schedule and no communication at all between the terminals. We arrived at the terminal at 9:15 was looking to take the 10:30 ferry and return by 4:45. During the ticket purchase, They told us because the one of the ferries broke the next one is available at 11-11:30. Finally, we wait till 2PM to get on the ferry. The return ticket can only be changed on the other side of terminal. We take our chance to onboard the ferry. When I got to the island (3PM), and the ticket terminal, they told us, we can either take the same ferry return or the next departure is 10:30PM. I changed to 10:30 return at no charge. We take our time, we left the beach at about 6. We take the same transportation back to the terminal. The terminal told us that there MAY have a 7PM ferry to return. Don't you think it is strange...They said "Maybe". They really not organized and no proper leadership in place. We wait outside for 30min for the ferry and thanks God that it arrived and we finally get back to hotel at San Juan by 9. If you look for beach/sand quality, I feel it is better than Ocean city and Virginia Beach. But Cancun have much better beaches. If you're looking for activities and food, here is not the...
Read moreMy family visited Culebra via the Fajardo ferry yesterday and we had the time of our lives. We had adults, teens, and a 5 yr old. Ferry ride was an hour long ride(MAKE sure to sit on the top deck although you might get wet if you sit in the middle). Upon arrival we were immediately greeted by whistling taxi drivers who have signs that say Flamenco Beach. They charge 3 bucks a person each way. There is a beach village that looked awesome, but we were all about seeing the beach so we skipped the village.Once you arrive at the beach be prepared to be blown away by the carribean beauty. We packed a cooler(you have to pay extra to bring the cooler on the ferry which was a whopping 4 bucks) and a couple beach bags. Kiosk at the entrance to the beach have all of your food and drink(even alcohol) needs covered as well. Our family had hours of fun in the sun and we were able to snorkel right off of the beach which was great! The beach was perfecly clean and we didny even need an umbrella(we had palm trees on the beach for shade!). I have family in Siesta Key Florida and have said my whole like that beach was the nicest beach I have ever been to, Flamenco Beach was hands down nicer than any beach I've been to. Maybe 75 people at most on the beach. Also make sure to go see the WW1 tank on the beach. We will visit Culebra every time we come to Puerto Rico...
