My husband and I have been members of Travel Resorts of America (which Gettysburg Battlefield Resort is one of their resorts) for a number of years. We expected opportunities to travel, camp, meet people and sight see.
I'm writing about our most recent experience at Gettysburg Battlefield Resort (GBR). We had a reservation at GBR from June 16th - June 30th. This was our third time at GBR, so we are fairly familiar with the resort and surrounding area. This review primarily has to do with our interactions with the staff of GBR. One day my husband and I had barely gotten into the pool when an employee was screaming in my face. I couldn't even understand what he was saying, he was so angry. I finally figured out that he wanted to know if I was smoking in the pool area. I DON'T EVEN SMOKE!!! Within ten minutes of this encounter, we did see a woman smoking and vaping right outside of the pool area. Nothing was done about that. On another occasion, we saw multiple people "vaping" right in the pool area. One woman was actually in the pool. Again, nothing was done about this.
The incident that prompted this Google review happened on the afternoon of Thursday, June 26th. My husband and I had spent most of the day at the pool. It was hot and we thought it would be a great way to cool off. After my husband was dried off, completely dry, he went to get a snack. His interaction with the snack bar employee was very positive. After purchasing his snack, he looked for signs indicating whether or not food was permitted in the lodge area. THERE WERE NONE. He proceeded to sit on a couch and eat his snack. He was IMMEDIATELY approached by an employee who stated "are you sitting on my couch with wet clothes on". My husband reassured this employee that he was not wearing wet clothes. She proceeded to get the manager. At this point my husband offered to move from his original spot on the couch in order to prove to these two employees that his clothes were not wet. Things escalated at this point and he was told to leave the lodge. He was also told that the police were being called. The first employee that approached my husband is a "person of color.' We believe this whole incident was 100% racially motivated.
We believe that my husband was targeted and we have no idea why. We are very respectful of any property and treat it as our own. We actually were asked to vacate the premises even though our reservation was through June 30th. We needed more time to pack up since my husband is a veteran and disabled and there was absolutely no compassion for him. Being what Gettysburg represents, we don't believe the staff would treat a veteran the way my husband was treated.
My husband is a veteran, is disabled and struggles with chronic pain. He was trying to find a comfortable spot to consume his snack when he sat on the couch in the lodge. The employees of GBR really need to learn how to positively interact with the members that use this location. There is absolutely no reason why things escalated to the point that they did. My husband called member services and was told that the GBR manager "can do whatever she wants to do", regardless of how a member's contract reads and what members are entitled to". We believe that to mean that she can discriminate against whoever she wants to. WE STILL HAVE QUESTIONS (AS MEMBERS) THAT NEED TO BE ANSWERED. If you plan to visit GBR, please make sure that you don't sit on the couch in the lodge to eat...
Read moreWe purchased a membership over 1 year ago to this month as a referral from our friends. (which I might add have still not gotten their referral bucks/bonus) It is a little campground with homely appeal. However, compared to larger camp grounds such as KOA it is definitely lacking to say the least. I do understand that this campground was built upon historical land which in turn causes delays with permits for upgrades and renovations. However, when a member signs up for placement it would be-who of the sale person to explain the lengthy time it takes for renovations and upgrades as well. If it was not for having our sales persons PERSONAL cell phone number we would have never known this. We like the site because it is 40 minutes from our home and we are still "getting away" without the lengthy travel if issues should arise. I will say that the staff are wonderful in respect that they have been there probably over 15 years each and they would do anything to help with whatever you need you just need to know what numbers to call. That leads me into that information needs to be given more thoroughly and accurately. It should also be kept more up-to-date especially for out of town people or new to the campgrounds.
The dilapidated campers that are out front are an eyesore for any business looking to increase sales. The drainage system should really be looked at and something should be looked at for the flooding that occurs in some of the sites. More gravel would be nice on each site so one would be able to determine the difference of the site and the gravel road.
My family and I absolutely understand that with upgrades and improvements it takes time, especially with a historical land. However, it may be-who of the resort to just close for 6 months and complete everything that NEEDS attention so paving is not done on the sun deck during July 4th camping. The cost for closing for 6 months during the off season to finish everything at once and drawl more attention during prime season would be ideal and your facilities would have less complaints.
Also the older members should maybe given some incentive for moving on and off or of the closer sites that are towards the pool in order to free these sites up for guests with little ones. This would make transport to the pool during the summer more convenient with little ones. OR free up the sites for MORE campers to come in.
i will say that the most recent paving has made an improvement, but I feel as though we have been made empty promises with membership. An update so be given every other month of six months as to what is going on. I know that there is a member meeting every month but i was never given any of that information when we joined.
The good thing about this membership is we can use it in FL for Disney which pays for itself. However, we would like the closer facilities to be a little more improved as well so we wouldn't have to travel far for better accommodations.
I will say this in closing, we saw the potential in this camp ground we are hoping that we are not made fools of with the promises for the future of this campground. We shall see if their promises hold true. If not we will be selling...
Read moreI have been told by several people that I can be hyper critical. However, the campground itself is not bad just not my personal fancy.
So I went up there for a tour which we signed up for at the Hershey RV show
We paid 40 bucks, we get there to do the presentation and they put us in a section where they were maybe seven campers. The pull through site was 45 feet long plenty for a 40 foot coach however, it was as unlevel as you could get. Meaning I had to pop a wheelie in the front to get level and I still wasn’t level, it was a weekend and it was free so I didn’t complain but we went and did the tour. Jade who took us around was absolutely amazing, knows her stuff but we ended up saying no and here’s the reasons why
For $16,000, and I’m never going to be turned down which is good, the bad is, I’m not ever going to go back on that site again which was site number 248. So if I’m spending $16,000 and I have to pop wheelies with my coach I can go somewhere else because that’s just not gonna happen and in some cases for some people it’s not safe.
The pool and clubhouse were cool and for those who like that environment great it’s right at the battlefield, which was great, plenty of food around and the ice cream at the various ice cream shops are amazing. Now here’s the ugly, if you are slightly dyslexic, have ADHD, or any type of anxiety all of it is going to get activated. My agent orange flared up and I wasn’t even in Vietnam. If you come back to this campground after dark and you don’t have a map or you didn’t drop breadcrumbs to come out, you’re never gonna find your site and you’re gonna end up Driving around in circles, because nothing is in straight numeric order. Then we got back to our campsite, but I had to use orienteering from Boy Scouts to do it. He took an army ranger and an Eagle Scout to get back to our site and for that kind of money I need something to be laid out a little bit different and much better.
For $16,000 I expect the clubhouse and the general store to be open past five. My issue with that is simple, in the fall and spring. I need to be able to get wood because campfires are needed. If you don’t want to freeze your Nom Noms off. Once again, I had to leave the property to go get wood and drop breadcrumbs to get back.
The one thing that I liked was the people. They were people camping from some of everywhere, and in some of everything. I wasn’t the only one that had to do a wheelie, I really felt bad for the people behind my friends, because their whole rear end was off the ground just to get level and this is the type of things that I’m talking about when I say not safe. That gas job coach could have rolled because the only breaks it has on the rear axle. . So his emergency brake was effectively nonexistent, at least my rear was on the ground.
In other words, I need to see a better quality campground, not only in Gettysburg, but the other seven or 11 places, however many that they were, and the people that use the membership have all said that Gettysburg is probably one of the best out of the bunch, which means the other ones have a lot...
