We booked a horseback tour for our history-loving family (2 adults and 2 kids). The people at Confederate Trails were great - all very kind and helpful. The experience we had, though, was not worth anywhere near what we paid for. Both of my kids identified very early in the tour that their earpieces weren't working. The guide was too far behind us to be able to hear her without the earpieces. Despite reporting the issue early in the tour (probably about 5 mins after it started), my kids were told to keep unplugging and replugging the device, which didn't work. My earpiece was spotty, but I could hear most of what the guide said. Eventually, my husband's completely stopped working as well. This wasn't addressed until halfway through the tour. By that point, my kids and husband had missed so much of the historical info that they had no idea what the guide was talking about and struggled to follow along once the earpieces were finally working. We could have paid a lot less for a horseback ride - the whole point of this ride was to hear about the history of Gettysburg as we toured the battlefield. While I totally understand that tech issues happen, I was pretty upset that this issue wasn't addressed more quickly so my kids and husband were able to hear the guide. I did reach out to the company afterwards, and they were very kind to offer complimentary tickets for the future, however after our experience, no one in my family is interested in another tour.
We also struggled with the tour because the guide was so far behind us that we weren't able to see what she was pointing out, as we had already passed the spots by the time she would talk about them. I understand our guide was someone not usually used to giving horseback tours, but again, it was difficult to keep up with a tour of the battlefield when we couldn't really see what she was pointing out. Additionally, the info the guide provided wasn't a basic approach to Gettysburg history. The tour guide definitely assumed we already knew a bit about the battle, and gave a much higher-level tour than I had expected. Unfortunately, this added to our kids' frustration, as they had limited knowledge about the battle. We were really hoping for more of a Gettysburg 101 approach.
While the tech and guide issues may not be a common occurrence, I wanted to provide our experience for those on the fence given the price of this tour. For us, it definitely...
Read moreMy friends and I took a tour recently and it was a pretty good time. We are All familiar with horses so we really enjoyed those calm, well behaved horses. The route was good. The guide was good. However staff was not. We were surprised that staff in charge of assigning horses was so scattered and confused particularly the safety lead named Ellie.
It was really hot and the ride was moving out when she stopped the line and swapped one of my friends off the horse he was assigned because she changed her mind. Meanwhile we all sat in the heat on horseback. She was also confused at check in with members of our group and was apparently riding a horse she could not dismount during the ride. We were not sure why a safety rider was riding s horse she could not dismount whenever someone needed help. Didn’t make us feel real safe to have our safety person unable to get down. On another occasion a safety guide got down to check on her ride who seemed overly hot and panting. Which was the right thing to do. Ellie commented “oh that horse is just overly dramatic”. I’ve known lots of horses. First time I ever heard how a Panting sweating horse was considered dramatic.
We assumed staff were professional horse help. If you can’t dismount, you stop a line going out because you changed your mind and you think a horse is overly dramatic maybe you need to...
Read moreSkip this! This was not worth the money for the experience. The ranch hands were not friendly and were down right rude at most times. Our group was 24 people which was way too big. Your horse must walk directly behind the horse in front or you will be yelled at to get back in line. If you are 1 foot off of center from the line, they will yell at you, keep in mind the trail is only like 6 ft wide so its not like you are going anywhere other than down the trail. This did not make for a fun experience. You walk down the trail for 1 hour to the barn with the cannon ball hole in it and then walk back the same trail for another hour. The guide was knowledgeable but all he did was talk for 2 hours straight. You could not ask questions since he was talking thru an earpiece and if you were in the front of the line you, you were no where near the guide to ask. I only gave this 1 star because the horses were well cared for, clean, friendly, and the guide was informative. This was honestly a big disappointment as it was supposed to be the highlight of our trip. I feel it was a big...
