This was my first time visiting the American Red Cross facility as opposed to a donation truck or a venue for a drive. While the latter are not bad experiences largely, the difference it made to go to the center for the donation was exceptional. This facility (off of 15-501 in Durham, located on the BCBS campus) was clean, organized and easy to navigate. The volunteers were extremely friendly. The atmosphere was calm. Because it wasn't a rushed experience, I was able to discuss some issues with my donations in the past with the staff members and find out how best to handle them in the future. My whole blood donation was done in 1/2 the time. I came back for a plasma donation and it wasn't a good match for the machine- but the process was still well done and I really appreciated the support and information from the staff members.

Scouters with Scouting America who went to donate. We had a great experience with the donation. No complaints.

I had an absolutely awful experience donating blood at this Red Cross location. I came fully prepared — drinking over 120 oz of fluids before and during the donation — yet was still told the blood wasn’t flowing because I was “dehydrated.” Instead of reassessing or trying another vein, I was repeatedly poked and prodded in the same spot, causing extreme pain. When I finally timed out, I wasn’t given any explanation, just told I’d have a massive bruise because I was “holding my arm wrong.” Seriously?

The staff showed zero compassion, blamed me for the failed donation, and made no effort to make the experience less painful or traumatic. I left in tears, physically hurting and emotionally drained. The lack of professionalism and accountability was staggering. If a vein isn’t working, you try another one — you don’t leave someone suffering and then gaslight...

I find giving platets very uncomfortable. I have donated 3 times and all three were freezing cold, so cold I felt sick at the end. I have never been offered a blanket and when I ask, they don’t have them. I have tried bringing my own along with arm warmers etc. but I still find it too difficult. I do give whole blood and will continue to do that. I also find the daily calls from Am Red Cross very irritating. I have consistently asked them to please not call as often or take me off the list. Doesn’t happen. I continue to get...
