Probably my favorite beach in New England, South Beach has a perfect combination of soft sand, big waves, and beautiful dunes. The water on Martha’s Vineyard is some of the most beautiful I’ve seen in the northern half of the US, and South Beach is a perfect example of that, with a turquoise tint to it. It features a long, wide stretch of sand to claim a spot on, making it feel less crowded than other beaches even on the busiest of days. A nearby airstrip sends out small planes regularly, which usually fly over the beach.

The thing South Beach is known for, however, is its powerful waves. I was a little let down by the gentle surf on my first visit, but my second time here was everything I’d hoped for. I had so much fun getting knocked around by those waves, and when I got tired of being tossed like a rag doll, I swam out a little from the shore and rode the waves before they crested, it felt almost like an amusement park ride! While this aspect might not make it the best for small children (State Beach would be a better option to avoid the waves!) I absolutely loved it. While the Cape and Islands boast a number of fantastic beaches, it would take a lot to dethrone South Beach as...

Best public beach on the island. Southern facing Atlantic beach with large waves. Limited facilities even in-season, including bathrooms and changing areas at the Eastern most, Western most, and one middle beach entrance. No running water or food available. Guarded by town lifeguards in-season (usually June 25th till Labor Day). Large parking lots available at the "Right Fork"(Western side/Herring Creek Road) of the beach. Parking also available along the entire length of Atlantic Ave. Do not park on the pavement Multiple paths from Atlantic Ave. lead to the beach. The entrance to Norton Point Beach (oversand permit required year round from Trustees of Reservations to access) is at the "Left Fork" (Eastern most side of South Beach/Katama Road). Note: Beware of possible unexploded WWII ordnance...if you find something, tell a guard or call police non emergency. It doesn't happen often, but a handful of times each year, unexploded practice bombs and rockets are found at this ex WWII practice bombing and...

Travellers, South beach on Martha’s Vineyard is as pristine as beaches get. The beach is long and gorgeous and because it is a south facing beach the sunrise as well as the sunsets are beautiful to see. The colors are wonderful. You can walk for miles and see few if any people on the beach with you. There is long pond behind the beach and the gorgeous views go in forever. It is not easy to find because it is down the end of dirt roads that are mostly closed after the summer season. If you have the opportunity take advantage and hit this south beach. Check it out. We recommend.

TLDR -doesn’t get...

A beautiful beach with gorgeous waves. Perfect sand castle sand. The dune reconstruction is going wonderfully and it's great to see!! This is the perfect beach to take a book or to go for a nap. Beware of the seagulls - they are fearless and have no qualms about snatching food directly from your hand.
