Why take the trouble to curate a great historical collection, and then staff it with people who couldn't care less about history? We arrived 40 mins before close, but we live nearby, so we just figured we'd see it in little bits. But the two young women staffing the place couldn't WAIT to get us out of there, and behaved really strangely: hovering over the video to turn it of the second its done (and getting frustrated and slamming the remote down when she realized it wasn't close to done yet), whispering and giggling, etc. It was too distracting to have a good time. Ultimately, they kicked us out 10 minutes before close, and honestly, I wasn't sad to leave since they were just unpleasant to be around. Maybe this place has more knowledgable and more mature staff other days, but the message I got was "history isn't important enough to hire or train...

Happend to be passing thru Saratoga and heard someone talking about the Cowboy Poetry Gathering. I got to Encampment bout 2. The poetry and musical entertainment was about 1/2 way done. I took a seat on the ground and heard some of the best musicians and poets I have heard in a long time. I found Encampment to be a small town hosting an unique event. The people were quite nice and welcoming. So glad I stopped in Saratoga and overheard a local conversation. The Gathering is a yearly event I came to understand. Talent from Colorado, Utah, and Wyomin. Homegrown talent from these States were a breath of fresh air from corporate musicians. To tope it off, july, 20 and the temp was 79 degrees. Dont let the small town with gravel streets deter you from...

Neat. Cool. Definitely worth checking out.

It's suggested you donate $5 for adults and $3 for children, I opted a different route and purchased roughly $9.54 worth of items from their very affordable gift shop.

The tour is free and is required if you desire to enter any of the 18 buildings on the property. They may have 1 or 2 open but to see the really cool stuff you have to opt for the tour. I decided to speedrun the tour guide due to dwindling energy reserves while walking the grounds, I'll probably get his name wrong, but Declan, was an awesome tour guide. Thanks for showing me around on the...

As a former tour guide at this museum, my family and I opted out of the guided tour, which can take up to 2.5 hours... But! It is still a fascinating glimpse of the good ole days of Grand Encampment! The buildings and various accoutrements are all authentic, and the scenery can't be beat. If you have the time, get a tour guide to tell you all about the history of each building on the grounds. If you've got an oxygen bottle handy, walk up to the top of the lookout tower!! An absolute GEM of a museum, and definitely check out the two story outhouse 🤣

Not a lot in Encampment the town. But the museum was definitely worth seeing. For a 5 dollar donation you get to walk through the museum and get a guided tour around the out buildings. It was well worth my time. They have local high school kids do the tours. Hayden was a joyv to talk with. He was very knowledgeable and willing to answer our questions. I would do it again .
