This is a great place to just walk and relax. Walked the red trail (the longest), did over 14K in steps.
Saw a turkey and a chipmunk, enjoy the waterfall/stream. There were quite a few people there, mostly older who seem to use the trail for exercise some even jogged. With the root growth from the trees I personally felt that was dangerous but if you're doing it for a while I guess you learn where to run. I had to keep watching my step so I didn't stumble or twist an ankle.
TAKE BUG REPELLENT!!! There wasn't a lot but they were annoying.
Bring water and snack. No place to get anything around there.
I was by myself but I enjoyed it. Made a day, followed Google Maps and took the NJ Transit bus from the GWB NY side, the ride was under 10 minutes. You get off on the side of the highway and walk up to Jones Rd a few steps up then walk about 2 blocks down turn right and walk about 4 blocks to the entrance (keep following G. Maps).
You can drive parking is free but you will have to pay a toll ($16) to get back to NY plus ga$$$$. Bus is cheaper, round-trip was $5.00. Buy your return ticket before leaving. No place to buy at the bus stop, you will have to pay the driver.
The trail was open when I arrived and I finished and left before the center opened at 1 pm. Took the bus back to NY.
By the time I got home all my leg muscles were sore but a good sore. Hadn't worked out that much since high school.
Go, take the kids. Do the shorter trail if they're not up to the longer one. Get a trail map and you enter. Pace yourself and enjoy nature (yes, you will...
Read moreOverbroad and vague signs. Respectfully and politely I asked the office staff Kera (unfriendly, rude, unhappy person with a cold facial expression who refused to spell her name) whether the service dogs are allowed on the premises of the park. This was asked on behalf of many dog owners I know, including myself. Some of the dogs are titled as service dogs, some dogs do provide an emotional support. The response was a demand to explain what type of services the dog does provide. There was no a correct way of asking whether the service dog is to provide any type of services. There was a demand to explain the nature of services which is often a confidential information protected by law and/or not to be shared with public. In response, I did state that’s a confidential info (moreover, I wouldn’t be able to share the info of others). The office staff’s next statement was that she was calling the police and whether that was something I wanted to deal with. I felt threatened. A state park hires those who probably didn’t even get a university degree yet but do impose threats to call the police. I felt and experienced in less than a minute a truly Bad customer service, unpleasant experience, and I did feel threatened. Read moreThis is a really great place to walk/hike and see all sorts of natural beauty. There is small parking lot, but the park does have several entrances, so you could probably park at one of those if its full. I started at the Aviary and saw four different types of birds (very cute) and got some info from one of the caretakers which was nice. The staff inside the main building were all very friendly and kind, and even allowed me to sit in last minute for a talk about one of the owls (Tilly). There are turtles, snakes, "an indoor for the winter" bird and small lizard (I think). The inside is basically a mini nature museum and would be a great place to bring children. They also have childrens events as well. As for the hiking, there are several loops to hike, some easier than others but all generally mild IMO (there were lots of families with small children hiking). Despite the amount of people it was very quiet and relaxing. There is also a playground and picnic area. There are bathrooms in the main building but the ones in the playground/picnic area are closed for the season per the sign. There are no dogs, or bikes allowed on the trail. Overall an excellent experience and I'd definitely recommend...
