Read moreIt's fantastic if you like casual hiking. A wealth of trails and a superbly scenic drive. I believe there is much for the hardcore hiker as well.
I'm more of a walking sightseer so I only liked, not loved it. This is because the entry fee is $30 per car, so you probably either need to be doing a lot of things there (fee good for 7 days, you can't get by the gate without a valid pass) or be really into hiking. Thus 4 instead of 5 stars for me.
But there are a ton of people who are really into it, it looked like everyone had trail gear. I might have been the only one who didn't have any. But for the easy to moderate trails I found tennis shoes sufficient if they have decent traction on rocks, it's dry, and you're careful not to stub your toes on the rocky trails.
This place appears to be super popular - I went on a Monday the week after Labor Day. I arrived around 10:30 - 11:00 am and the sizable parking lot was only 25% filled at most. When I was done walking a couple hours later, the lot was 90% filled. Imagine if this had been a weekend or before or during Labor Day. Go early is my recommendation - this is Sunrise Visitor Center, so if you go at sunrise the imagery of the sun reflecting off Mt. Rainier is supposed to be incredible.
The visitor center is actually closed at this time, I'm not sure if it's due to the time of year or other circumstances. It can't be lack of demand given the...
Read moreI came before 7am so I didn’t have to have a timed entry reservation. Before 7am and after 5pm does not require timed entry reservation. This trail is right off the sunrise visitor center and it is beautiful! Photos do not do it justice. Be aware this is a moderately difficult trail. I’d recommend walking sticks (for balance LOTS OF LOOSE ROCKS!!) and plenty of water. As always bring the ten essentials just in case. The trail itself is around 6 miles long including the way there and back. Lots of wild life that you can see and it was decently populated even though I went super early. It took me around 3 hours in total. Near the end the trail is pretty rocky (flat loose rocks), the elevation can be steep but it is mainly gradual, and it is very high up (the trail is on the ledge- often you will have to stop to let people coming in the opposite direction pass because there is not enough room for two people to walk past each other without falling off the mountain 😂). Overall I really enjoyed this hike, I hike semi frequently and did fine. I also saw people on the trail with children, so I would say family friendly if you keep a close eye on the little ones. The wildlife here is not afraid of people so you get to say hi to all the critters...
