Weβve visited this state park several times over the years and have always appreciated its beauty. However, this most recent visit (July 20 2025)was extremely disappointing.
The staff at the lighthouse was unreasonably strict and unfriendly about the lighthouse stamp. Even though weβve been here before and made a purchase at the gift shop, they only allowed us to stamp onceβno exceptions. When I kindly asked to stamp for my postcards of some friends, the postcards were bought in other Mendocino state park before, I was refused in a very dismissive manner.
It felt like the staff were gatekeeping something that should be a welcoming and fun part of the park experience. We are loyal visitors who genuinely care about and support California State Parks, so itβs upsetting to be treated this way.
If youβre coming for the lighthouse passport stamp or as a returning guest, just be aware that the experience may not be as friendly or flexible...

This lighthouse is unique like Pigeon Point Lighthouse in that they both have Fresnel lenses still in use. At this lighthouse the unique thing about the still working lenses is that while most Fresnel lenses were made in France, but this one was made in Britain instead. Great place to visit and they have turned a couple of the lighthouse keepers houses into places you can reserve and stay in. I imagine the waiting list to stay there would be very long, but I'm going to try and get a reservation in the future. Be warned, unless you have a permit to park by the lighthouse or you have a handicap placard, you will have a really really long walk to get there. You have to park at the entrance to the park otherwise and walk a long distance. Worth all the effort though. It's an amazing...

Plan Ahead for being offgrid and bring a paper map, though the book of things to do on the counter here has a couple of maps. Up to teach the dance at the Caspar Community Ctr, and were treated to fantastic Fourth Sunday Breakfast (9 - 11) same place. Here there are a little microwave, fridge, freezer, (safe?); the most delightful roll-in / walk-in showers with pull-down seat. If you stay, you get a parking spot right by the cabin, anyone using a wheelchair would be well delighted with Cabin 42. Still walking, I appreciated being able to drive down closer to the lighthouse and hop out. For the even more abled, there are splendid walks...
